Nebraska will be trying to preserve its perfect in-state record when it hosts South Dakota on Wednesday night in a nonconference game in Lincoln, Neb. The Cornhuskers (4-1) are 3-0 at home and also won Friday at then-No. 14 Creighton, beating their in-state rivals on the road for the second straight time. But the last time they did that, in 2022, they followed that win with a 16-point loss at Indiana to open Big Ten Conference play. "Believe me, we've addressed a lot of things," Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said. "A lot of people are saying some really positive things. You've got to find a way to put that behind you. I've liked how our team has responded and come back to work after that great win at Creighton." Brice Williams leads the Cornhuskers with 18.2 points per game and was one of five players in double figures against Creighton. Juwan Gary topped the list with 16. South Dakota (6-2) comes to town off a 112-50 home win Monday night over Randall, the third non-Division I school it has beat. The Coyotes' last game against a D1 opponent was Friday at Southern Indiana, resulting in a 92-83 loss. This will be South Dakota's second nonconference game against a Big Ten opponent, after a 96-77 loss at Iowa on Nov. 12. In December, the Coyotes also visit Santa Clara, hovering near the top 100 in KenPom adjusted efficiency, before jumping into Big Sky play. "The schedule is very good and that should help us," third-year South Dakota coach Eric Peterson said before the season. "We have some good nonconference games that should help prepare us for the end of the season." Nebraska has held four of its opponents to 67 or fewer points, with Saint Mary's the only one to top that number in the Cornhuskers' lone loss. Opponents are shooting 38.1 percent this season. South Dakota shot below 40 percent in its two previous games before shooting 62 percent against Randall. Isaac Bruns, who scored 20 to lead South Dakota in the Randall game, paces the Coyotes with 12.9 points per game. --Field Level Media

Cal State University students, faculty and staff rallied this week to voice their concerns and frustrations with what protestors called the CSU management’s suppression of free speech, absence of shared governance and lack of accountability. The CSU chancellor’s office, in a statement, said it takes the concerns seriously — but the students remain at the center of its decision making. Professors, lecturers, counselors, coaches, librarians and students gathered outside of the CSU Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Long Beach, urging that trustees prioritize student learning and success in and out of the classroom. “We are the voice of the people and we are here to remind them that we matter,” Vang Vang, California Faculty Association treasurer and Fresno State librarian, said during the rally. “We are the heart and soul of the universities and we will make sure that they hear us every single day.” During the rally, there were speeches from students, faculty and staff. Many said they were done with the trustees’ limit of one minute per speaker for public comment during board meetings, so holding their own public comment offered a space for people to share their experiences at the CSU. CFA members also put on a street theater performance, during which they criticized the actions of CSU Chancellor Mildred Garcia and brought attention to issues of limited free speech, how tuition money is being spent, courses being cut and more happening at the 23 campuses across the CSU system. “It was a creative way to express our frustration towards the chancellor’s office,” said Elaine Bernal, a lecturer in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Cal State Long Beach, who participated in the performance. “They’re not going to listen to use in our one-minute comments, so might as well get really creative with it and really showcase what’s going on inside.” Luis Ortiz, a student at Cal State Long Beach and member of Students for Quality Education, said that he had been coming to the chamber for three years and has felt ignored by the CSU Board of Trustees. “Every single cry for change, tears were shed in that chamber, their backs turned against us but we won’t give up,” Ortiz said. “We don’t do it for ourselves; we do it for the next generation.” In a statement on Wednesday, the CSU Office of the Chancellor said that they acknowledged the concerns expressed by the CFA members and “take them seriously.” “But our collective focus must continue to keep students at the center of our decision-making,” the statement said. “We have a shared responsibility to empower students from all socioeconomic backgrounds to achieve their academic and personal goals, and our faculty and staff play a critically important role in helping the CSU fulfill that promise.” Protestors also accused the chancellor’s office of silencing and intimidating faculty and students for exercising their free speech and academic freedom on CSU campuses, especially with the new “ Time, Place and Manner” policy that was implemented earlier this year after a rise in pro-Palestininan students setting up encampments and protesting for universities to divest from Israel as the ongoing war in the Middle East continues. The policy restricts face coverings and requires advance written approval for posters, signs, banners and chalking, protestors said. “The CSU is committed to freedom of speech and expression as an essential component of its educational mission,” the chancellor’s office said in a statement. “Through its new systemwide policy, the CSU will ensure that individuals and groups are afforded wide latitude in lawfully exercising the right of free expression and that their constitutionally protected right to free expression is not abridged.” Students and faculty once again brought up the concern of the 34% tuition hike over the next five years , which the board approved last year after much opposition. Raising fees would further disproportionately affect marginalized students – such as native, Black and brown students, students with disabilities, and trans students who are already under tremendous financial strain, protestors said on Wednesday. “I was here last year trying to avoid the tuition hikes but that didn’t work, so I want to know, where is that money going?” said Britneey Ochoa, a student from Cal State Northridge, “because obviously we’re not being shown that, because our campus is not providing anything new for us.” The CSU raised tuition twice in the past 13 years, according to the CSU chancellor’s office. “No university system can sustain financial viability for that length of time without a tuition increase,” the chancellor’s office said in a statement. “The revenue from the tuition increase is essential to provide the CSU with the financial stability it needs to continue to serve students today and in the future, invest in our academic programs, and support our workforce. “In fact, one-third of new tuition revenue from the recent increase is dedicated to financial aid,” the statement added, “ensuring that we can continue to make higher education attainment affordable for all students.”
OTTAWA - Here’s how notable Canadian politicians and business groups are reacting to U.S. president-elect’s threat to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all goods coming from Canada: “The fact is we need them, and they also need us. Canada is the largest market for the U.S. in the world, larger than China, Japan, the U.K. and France combined.” “This is a moment when Canada needs to be united. We need to be strong, and we need to be smart.” Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland ——— “I’m calling on Prime Minister Trudeau to put partisanship aside, and in the spirit of Team Canada, to accept that he cannot go ahead with quadrupling the carbon tax to 61 cents a litre.” “Next, he has to cancel all tax increases; tax increases on work, investment and making stuff in Canada.” “I don’t want to stop drug overdoses to please Donald Trump. I want to stop drug overdoses so that there’s not one more mother with her face buried in a pillow, sobbing that she just lost her kid.” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre ——— “We want to have a strong Team Canada, Team Manitoba approach to incoming U.S. administration. This is our most important ally and our biggest trading partner by far.” “It would mean a recession for our province. We can’t have that happening, especially as we’re starting to make progress on health care, education and making a lot of good investments. We want to keep that momentum going.” “First and foremost, hitting that target of two per cent spending on defence. That gets us in the game just to be taken seriously as a security partner with the U.S. If we don’t do it, it’s going to become a trade problem.” Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew ——— “We buy more American stuff than France, than China and Japan and the United Kingdom combined. So, we are negotiating, I believe, from a position of strength. But also Americans are dependent on what we produce.” B.C. Premier David Eby ——— “It’s like a family member stabbing you right in the heart.” “To compare us to Mexico is the most insulting thing I’ve ever heard from our friends and closest allies, the United States of America.” “A message to president-elect Trump: there’s no closer ally, there’s no other country in the world that has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with our American counterparts, our friends, our family.” Ontario Premier Doug Ford ——— “The incoming U.S. administration has valid concerns related to illegal activities at our shared border. We are calling on the federal government to work with the incoming administration to resolve these issues immediately, thereby avoiding any unnecessary tariffs on Canadian exports to the U.S.” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith ——— “We have, from Quebec to (the) United States, $87 billion of exportation and only $43 billion of importation. So we cannot start a war and we have to do everything we can to not have these tariffs.” Quebec Premier François Legault ——— “Imposing tariffs wouldn’t just harm Canada’s economy — it would also hurt U.S. manufacturers by increasing their costs and disrupting the deeply integrated supply chains that make North American manufacturing globally competitive.” Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters ——— “Being America’s ‘nice neighbour’ won’t get us anywhere in this situation. President-elect Trump’s intention to impose 25 per cent tariffs signals that the U.S.-Canada trade relationship is no longer about mutual benefit. To him, it’s about winners and losers — with Canada on the losing end.” “We’re facing a significant shift in the relationship between longstanding allies. Canada’s signature approach needs to evolve: we must be prepared to take a couple of punches if we’re going to stake out our position. It’s time to trade ‘sorry’ for ‘sorry, not sorry.’” Candace Laing, Canadian Chamber of Commerce president and CEO ——— “The damage from such tariffs will not stop at the workplace. Families will feel the economic strain, and entire communities will suffer as good jobs disappear and opportunities shrink. This is not just a trade issue; it’s about protecting the future of workers and their families.” “In the long term, the government must focus on a new industrial strategy for Canada to protect our workers from the whims of any U.S. administration. We call on the government to send a clear message: we will not let our workers and industries become collateral damage, we will stand strong, act boldly, and prioritize Canadian workers.” Bea Bruske, Canadian Labour Congress president ——— This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 26, 2024.

Nigerians across ethnic and religious divides, at home and in the diaspora, have nominated the immediate past Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for the ‘Governor of the Year’ category in the ThisDay Awards 2024. This year’s edition of the yearly awards, organised by the ThisDay/Arise Group Board of Editors, and tagged ‘When the Going Gets Tough... the Tough Get Rewarded!’, will be held on January 22, 2025. According to the organisers, the ‘Governor of the Year Award’ goes to “That Governor who combines vision, passion, dedication and courage to make the lives of the people of his state better.” Leading the nomination of Obaseki as ‘Governor of the Year’ is the immediate past Commissioner for Digital Economy, Science and Technology in Edo State, Ogbeide Ifaluyi-isibor, who said, “In his eight years of leadership of Edo, Obaseki’s milestone achievements in education, healthcare, innovation, tourism, agriculture, pension, city planning, security, science, civil service and corporate governance are laudable footprints that will stand the test of time.” He said, “His landmark achievements in the creation of the Edo State Tier-3 Data Centre, which facilitated digital services management for government agencies, the deployment of Health Information Management System, Electronic Health Records and Telemedicine Services, helped to streamline healthcare delivery, improve patient management and extend healthcare access to rural communities.” Ifaluyi-isibor described Obaseki as a man of vision with passion for excellence and unequalled zeal to impact the lives of his people. The former Edo State commissioner said, “Obaseki’s eight years leadership in Edo was outstanding. He not only utilised his experiences in the private sector to the benefit of the state, he also ensured that no one was left behind during his tenure in office by providing key infrastructure that added great value to the lives of the people of the state.” Ifaluyi-isibor added he was not surprised at Obaseki’s achievements in office because of his track record of excellence, saying he found him fit for the ‘Governor of the Year’ award and urged him to continue to find other ways to make life better for his people. In nominating Obaseki for the award, an international journalist in the United Kingdom, Mayozi John, said, “Since 1999, Obaseki is the best governor Edo State has produced. In all ramifications, he stood out. In all sectors, his presence was felt and is still being felt, even by thousands of Nigerians in the diaspora.” John, who spoke to journalists on his visit to Nigeria for the Christmas holiday, said, “Across the streets of the United States, the UK and across Europe, many sing his (Obaseki) praises after they must have visited Nigeria and chance upon Edo State. “Many Nigerians plan to hold a solidarity protest for Obaseki in the United States as soon as Donald Trump is sworn in as President in January 2025.” He added, “Obaseki’s tenure as Edo governor will continue to inspire and serve as a reference point for future leaders of the state.” John said it would take an extraordinary human being like Obaseki to best his own records, adding that the extraordinary person has yet to arrive the scene. The digitisation and reforms of the pension management with the Edo State Pension Management System and an online pension portal are laudable projects that continue to attract local and global accolades. The Smart City Initiative and investments in fibre optic infrastructure enabled high-speed Internet access across the state, laying the foundation for further digital services and urban planning within the state. The EdoBEST programme helped to revolutionise primary and junior secondary education by integrating technology into teaching and learning processes. Other key categories in the award include ‘Titans of The Year’ for the men and women who, through their vision, action, guts and courage made a lasting impact on Nigeria, and ‘Man of the Year’ for the man who significantly influenced major events that defined the outgoing year, 2024. Others include: ‘Bank of the Year’, ‘Banker of the Year’, ‘Global Bank of the Year’, ‘Brand of the Year’, ‘Company of the Year’ and ‘Product of the Year’. In addition, there is a segment reserved for ‘Senator of the Year’, ‘Representative of the Year’ as well as ‘Government Agency of the Year’. Other categories include ‘Investor of the Year’ and ‘Young Global Leaders of the Year’.

He is not yet in power but President-elect Donald Trump rattled much of the world with an off-hours warning of stiff tariffs on close allies and China — a loud hint that Trump-style government by social media post is coming back. With word of these levies against goods imported from Mexico, Canada and China, Trump sent auto industry stocks plummeting, raised fears for global supply chains and unnerved the world’s major economies. For Washington-watchers with memories of the Republican’s first term, the impromptu policy volley on Monday evening foreshadowed a second term of startling announcements of all manner, fired off at all hours of the day from his smartphone. “Donald Trump is never going to change much of anything,” said Larry Sabato, a leading US political scientist and director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. “You can expect in the second term pretty much what he showed us about himself and his methods in the first term. Social media announcements of policy, hirings and firings will continue.” The first of Trump’s tariff announcements — a 25 percent levy on everything coming in from Mexico and Canada — came amid an angry rebuke of lax border security at 6:45 pm on Truth Social, Trump’s own platform. The United States is bound by agreements on the movement of goods and services brokered by Trump in a free trade treaty with both nations during his first term. But Trump warned that the new levy would “remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country” — sowing panic from Ottawa to Mexico City. Seconds later, another message from the incoming commander-in-chief turned the focus on Chinese imports, which he said would be hit with “an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs.” The consequences were immediate. Almost every major US automaker operates plants in Mexico, and shares in General Motors and Stellantis — which produce pickup trucks in America’s southern neighbor — plummeted. Canada, China and Mexico protested, while Germany called on its European partners to prepare for Trump to impose hefty tariffs on their exports and stick together to combat such measures. – Framing the debate – The tumult recalls Trump’s first term, when journalists, business leaders and politicians at home and abroad would scan their phones for the latest pronouncements, often long after they had left the office or over breakfast. During his first four years in the Oval Office, the tweet — in those days his newsy posts were almost exclusively limited to Twitter, now known as X — became the quasi-official gazette for administration policy. The public learned of the president-elect’s 2020 Covid-19 diagnosis via an early-hours post, and when Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani was assassinated on Trump’s order, the Republican confirmed the kill by tweeting a US flag. The public and media learned of numerous other decisions big and small by the same source, from the introduction of customs duties to the dismissal of cabinet secretaries. It is not a communication method that has been favored by any previous US administration and runs counter to the policies and practices of most governments around the world. Throughout his third White House campaign, and with every twist and turn in his various entanglements with the justice system, Trump has poured his heart out on Truth Social, an app he turned to during his 20-month ban from Twitter. In recent days, the mercurial Republican has even named his attorney general secretaries of justice and health via announcements on the network. “He sees social media as a tool to shape and direct the national conversation and will do so again,” said political scientist Julian Zelizer, a Princeton University professor. With 2,400 staff representing 100 different nationalities, AFP covers the world as a leading global news agency. AFP provides fast, comprehensive and verified coverage of the issues affecting our daily lives.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returned home Saturday after his meeting with Donald Trump without assurances the president-elect will back away from threatened tariffs on all products from the major American trading partner. Trump called the talks “productive” but signaled no retreat from a pledge that Canada says unfairly lumps it in with Mexico over the flow of drugs and migrants into the United States. After the leaders’ hastily arranged dinner Friday night at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, Trudeau spoke of “an excellent conversation.” Trump said in a Truth Social post later Saturday that they discussed “many important topics that will require both Countries to work together to address.” For issues in need of such cooperation, Trump cited fentanyl and the “Drug Crisis that has decimated so many lives as a result of Illegal Immigration,” fair trade deals “that do not jeopardize American Workers” and the U.S. trade deficit with its ally to the north. Trump asserted that the prime minister had made “a commitment to work with us to end this terrible devastation” of American families from fentanyl from China reaching the United States through its neighbors. The U.S., he said, “will no longer sit idly by as our Citizens become victims to the scourge of this Drug Epidemic.” The Republican president-elect has threatened to impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S. from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders when he takes office in January. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds at the Mexican border. On immigration, the U.S. Border Patrol made 56,530 arrests at the Mexican border in October alone and 23,721 arrests at the Canadian border between October 2023 and September 2024 — and Canadian officials say they are ready to make new investments in border security. Trudeau called Trump after the Republican’s social media posts about the tariffs last Monday and they agreed to meet, according to a official familiar with the matter who was not authorized to publicly discuss detail of the private talks. The official said other countries are calling Canadian officials to hear how about how the meeting was arranged and to ask for advice. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, after speaking with Trump on the telephone, said Thursday she was confident a tariff war with Washington would be averted. At the dinner that was said to last three hours, Trump said he and Trudeau also discussed energy, trade and the Arctic. A second official cited defense, Ukraine, NATO, China, the Mideast, pipelines and the Group of Seven meeting in Canada next year as other issues that arose. Trudeau’s office said in a statement that the leaders “shared a productive wide-ranging discussion” centering on “collaboration and strengthening our relationship,” adding, “As Canada’s closest friend and ally, the United States is our key partner, and we are committed to working together in the interests of Canadians and Americans.” Trump, during his first term as president, once called Trudeau “weak” and “dishonest,” but it was the prime minister who was the first G7 leader to visit Trump since the Nov. 5 election. “Tariffs are a crucial issue for Canada and a bold move was in order. Perhaps it was a risk, but a risk worth taking,” Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal. Trudeau had said before leaving from Friday that Trump was elected because he promised to bring down the cost of groceries but now was talking about adding 25% to the cost of all kinds of products, including potatoes from Prince Edward Island in Atlantic Canada. “It is important to understand that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it,” Trudeau said. “Our responsibility is to point out that he would not just be harming Canadians, who work so well with the United States, but he would actually be raising prices for Americans citizens as well and hurting American industry and business,” he added. The threatened tariffs could essentially blow up the North American trade pact that Trump’s team negotiated during his first term. Trudeau noted they were able to successfully renegotiate the deal, which he calls a “win win” for both countries. When Trump imposed higher tariffs as president, other countries responded with retaliatory tariffs of their own. Canada, for instance, announced billions of new duties in 2018 against the U.S. in a response to new taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states. Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian (US $2.7 billion) worth of goods and services cross the border each day. About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports are from Canada. Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S. and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon is eager for and investing in for national security. Canada is one of the most trade-dependent countries in the world, and 77% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S.

NoneNew York City T-Bone Accident Lawyer Samantha Kucher Releases Comprehensive Article on T-Bone Accidents 11-25-2024 10:22 PM CET | Politics, Law & Society Press release from: ABNewswire New York City T-bone accident lawyer [ https://www.rrklawgroup.com/new-york-t-bone-accident-lawyer/ ] Samantha Kucher of Kucher Law Group has published a detailed article discussing the causes, consequences, and legal challenges associated with T-bone car accidents. The article provides valuable insights for individuals who have experienced such collisions, which often result in severe injuries, vehicle damage, and complex legal issues As a New York City T-bone accident lawyer, Samantha Kucher emphasizes the significant impact that side-impact collisions can have on victims. "T-bone accidents are among the most dangerous types of car crashes because the sides of vehicles offer less protection than the front or rear," Kucher explains. "Victims often face serious physical injuries, emotional trauma, and financial difficulties, which makes understanding their rights and legal options all the more important." The article defines T-bone accidents, often referred to as side-impact collisions, and explains how they typically occur. According to the New York City T-bone accident lawyer, these crashes are most common at intersections and are often caused by failure to yield, running red lights, distracted driving, or impaired driving. Kucher highlights the unique challenges of these accidents, noting, "Determining fault in a T-bone collision can be complicated because it often involves assessing traffic signals, driver behavior, and other factors. That's why it's essential to approach these cases with a thorough and strategic legal plan." The article dives deeper into what makes T-bone accidents particularly hazardous. Unlike rear-end or head-on collisions, side-impact crashes expose passengers to greater risk due to the lack of structural protection on the sides of vehicles. Kucher notes that the force of impact often leads to severe injuries, including head trauma, spinal injuries, broken ribs, and internal organ damage. In addition to physical injuries, the article discusses the emotional and financial toll of T-bone accidents. Victims may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, or depression, while also facing significant medical expenses and lost income due to their injuries. "The aftermath of a T-bone accident is not just about physical recovery," Kucher says. "It's also about addressing the emotional and financial challenges that victims and their families endure." The article outlines the process of determining fault in T-bone accidents, which can be particularly intricate under New York's comparative negligence laws. These laws allow multiple parties to share responsibility for an accident, with compensation adjusted based on each party's degree of fault. Kucher explains that evidence such as traffic camera footage, witness statements, police reports, and physical evidence like skid marks or vehicle damage plays a critical role in establishing liability. "Each case is unique, and proving fault often requires a detailed investigation," she says. "The goal is to gather as much evidence as possible to build a strong case for compensation." The article also highlights the challenges of dealing with insurance companies after a T-bone accident. Insurance adjusters may attempt to undervalue claims or delay settlements, complicating the recovery process for victims. Kucher advises victims to seek legal guidance to handle these negotiations effectively. Kucher explains the types of compensation available to T-bone accident victims in New York, including economic damages (such as medical expenses and lost wages) and non-economic damages (such as pain and suffering). In some cases, victims may also be entitled to punitive damages if the other driver's behavior was particularly reckless or harmful. "The goal of pursuing compensation is to help victims recover from the physical, emotional, and financial harm they've suffered," Kucher states. "Every case is different, and the amount and type of compensation will depend on the specific circumstances of the accident." Victims of T-bone accidents face a challenging road to recovery, but they don't have to face it alone. Samantha Kucher's article encourages those affected to seek legal representation to protect their rights and pursue the compensation they deserve. PHOTOSHOP maker Adobe forecast fiscal 2025 revenue below Wall Street estimates on Wednesday (Dec 11), indicating the company’s investments to weave artificial intelligence (AI) into its software applications were taking longer to bear fruit. Shares of the San Jose, California-based company fell over 8 per cent in extended trading. The company forecast revenue between US$23.3 billion and US$23.55 billion compared with estimates of US$23.78 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Adobe expects a headwind of around US$200 million to its fiscal 2025 revenue as a result of foreign exchange volatility and the company’s shift towards subscriptions. The company is making significant investments in AI-driven image and video generation technologies in response to the growing competition from well-capitalised startups such as Stability AI and Midjourney. While Adobe projected strong growth for the second half of the year in June, its forecast on Wednesday indicated the company was still struggling to monetise its AI push. The company forecasts first-quarter revenue between US$5.63 billion and US$5.68 billion, below estimates of US$5.73 billion. REUTERSNEW YORK (AP) — Stocks rose in afternoon trading on Wall Street Friday, keeping the market on track for its fifth gain in a row. The S&P 500 was up 0.4% and is solidly on track for a weekly gain that will erase most of last week's loss. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 351 points, or 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.2% as of 1:03 p.m. Eastern. Markets have been volatile over the last few weeks, losing ground in the runup to elections in November, then surging following Donald Trump's victory, before falling again. The S&P 500 has been steadily rising throughout this week to within close range of its record. “Overall, market behavior has normalized following an intense few weeks,” said Mark Hackett, chief of investment research at Nationwide, in a statement. Several retailers jumped after giving Wall Street encouraging financial updates. Gap soared 10.6% after handily beating analysts' third-quarter earnings and revenue expectations, while raising its own revenue forecast for the year. Discount retailer Ross Stores rose 3.1% after raising its earnings forecast for the year. EchoStar fell 3.4% after DirecTV called off its purchase of that company's Dish Network unit. Smaller company stocks had some of the biggest gains. The Russell 2000 index rose 1.7%. A majority of stocks in the S&P 500 were gaining ground, but those gains were kept in check by slumps for several big technology companies. Nvidia fell 3.2%. Its pricey valuation makes it among the heaviest influences on whether the broader market gains or loses ground. The company has grown into a nearly $3.6 trillion behemoth because of demand for its chips used in artificial-intelligence technology. Intuit, which makes TurboTax and other accounting software, fell 4.1%. It gave investors a quarterly earnings forecast that fell short of analysts’ expectations. Facebook owner Meta Platforms fell 0.4% following a decision by the Supreme Court to allow a multibillion-dollar class action investors’ lawsuit to proceed against the company. It stems from the privacy scandal involving the Cambridge Analytica political consulting firm. European markets were mostly higher and Asian markets ended mixed. Crude oil prices rose. Treasury yields held relatively steady in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.41% from 4.42% late Thursday. In the crypto market, Bitcoin hovered around $99,000, according to CoinDesk. It has more than doubled this year and first surpassed the $99,000 level on Thursday. Retailers remained a big focus for investors this week amid close scrutiny on consumer spending habits headed into the holiday shopping season. Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, reported a quarter of strong sales and gave investors an encouraging financial forecast. Target, though, reported weaker earnings than analysts' expected and its forecast disappointed Wall Street. Consumer spending has fueled economic growth, despite a persistent squeeze from inflation and high borrowing costs. Inflation has been easing and the Federal Reserve has started trimming its benchmark interest rates. That is likely to help relieve pressure on consumers, but any major shift in spending could prompt the Fed to reassess its path ahead on interest rates. Also, any big reversals on the rate of inflation could curtail spending. Consumer sentiment remains strong, according to the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index. It revised its latest figure for November to 71.8 from an initial reading of 73 earlier this month, though economists expected a slight increase. It's still up from 70.5 in October. The survey also showed that consumers' inflation expectations for the year ahead fell slightly to 2.6%, which is the lowest reading since December of 2020. Wall Street will get another update on how consumers feel when the business group The Conference Board releases its monthly consumer confidence survey on Tuesday. A key inflation update will come on Wednesday when the U.S. releases its October personal consumption expenditures index. The PCE is the Fed's preferred measure of inflation and this will be the last PCE reading prior to the central bank's meeting in December.

How to Watch Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Games – Tuesday, November 26Here's how the ASX 200 market sectors stacked up last weekWalmart Canada axing some property controls amid grocery competition scrutiny Walmart Canada says it's getting rid of property controls relating to retail competition across the country. Rosa Saba, The Canadian Press Nov 22, 2024 1:11 PM Share by Email Share on Facebook Share on X Share on LinkedIn Print Share via Text Message People shop at a Walmart in Vaughan, Ont., on Wednesday, July 2, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christopher Katsarov Walmart Canada says it's getting rid of property controls relating to retail competition across the country. The move comes as Canada's competition watchdog is investigating the use of the restrictive real estate covenants, and as two major grocers have indicated they would be open to eliminating them. The grocery industry's use of property controls, which are terms baked into commercial leases that put restrictions on other tenants and their activities, has recently come under scrutiny. Walmart said Friday it decided to "unilaterally waive any competitive retail restrictions" and is in the process of notifying its landlords and other landowners of the change. The Competition Bureau is investigating the use of property controls by the parent companies of Loblaw and Sobeys, and has said they are hampering competition in the grocery sector. Property controls are widely used not just in the grocery industry, but in retail and other sectors. These controls could be used to prevent another grocer from entering a shopping plaza, for example, or to prevent another retailer from selling certain items. They could also be used to limit the kinds of businesses that can take over a store location after a company leaves. In October, Loblaw said it would eliminate its use of commercial property controls if other grocers did the same. Property controls have been around for decades across industries with the intent to incentivize development, said Loblaw spokeswoman Catherine Thomas in a statement at the time. “That said, in some circumstances, they might reduce options for customers.” At the time, Sobeys owner Empire said it would like to see the government eliminate the use of the clauses across retail. Walmart Canada spokeswoman Sarah Kennedy said the company made the decision "in light of recent changes in Canada." The company did not elaborate on the changes in question. But recent amendments to the Competition Act have given the Bureau more tools at its disposal to protect and promote competition. One of these amendments, which comes into force mid-December, allows the Bureau to take action against agreements or arrangements between two parties that seek to prevent or lessen competition. Before this amendment, the Bureau could only take action on such arrangements if they were between two competitors, meaning a grocer and its landlord would be exempt. Deputy commissioner Anthony Durocher previously said property controls can be a barrier both for independent grocery stores and larger chains, as well as for foreign grocers looking to enter the Canadian market. “The Bureau is committed to using the new tools made available through these amendments wherever necessary to protect competition,” Durocher told a House of Commons committee in February as he announced the Bureau’s investigation. In a study on the grocery market prior to the Competition Act amendments, the bureau recommended that provincial and territorial governments take measures to limit the use of property controls in the grocery industry, including potential bans. Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne previously said he’s courting foreign grocers to come to Canada as a way of boosting competition amid scrutiny over food inflation and concentration in the grocery industry. COLUMBIA — South Carolina is searching for a new offensive coordinator after Dowell Loggains accepted the head-coaching role at Appalachian State on Saturday. He is the third Gamecock assistant in the past two seasons to be hired as a head coach, following Pete Lembo (Buffalo) and Jody Wright (Murray State). Loggains had never been a college offensive coordinator before Shane Beamer hired him two years ago, and will now take his first head-coaching job. Beamer is tasked with hiring his third OC before beginning his fifth season at USC. Senior offensive assistant coach Mike Shula is expected to be the Gamecocks' interim OC for their bowl game. Loggains spent 16 years in the NFL after a walk-on spot at Arkansas turned into a scholarship and a four-year career where he played in 50 games. He returned to the Razorbacks for two seasons as tight ends coach, where he got to know running back Rocket Sanders. Beamer hired him to replace Marcus Satterfield after the 2022 season, and after 2023, Loggains was instrumental in bringing Sanders to USC. The Gamecocks averaged 31.6 points per game this year and saw quarterback LaNorris Sellers develop into one of the most feared QBs in the SEC. Meanwhile, Sanders took the worst rushing offense in the conference last year and made it third this year, the Gamecocks rushing for 188.9 yards per game. Loggains is replacing Shawn Clark at Appalachian. Clark was in Boone for five seasons and went 40-24, but this year's 5-6 mark was the Mountaineers' first losing year since 2013.Atm Expansion: A Key Driver Transforming The Cash Logistics Market 2024Qatar's prime minister said on Saturday that momentum had returned to talks aimed at securing a truce and hostage exchange deal in Gaza following Donald Trump's election as US president. The Gulf emirate, along with the United States and Egypt, had been involved in months of unsuccessful negotiations for a Gaza truce and hostage release. But in November, Doha announced it had put its mediation on hold, saying it would resume when Hamas and Israel showed "willingness and seriousness". "We have sensed, after the election, that the momentum is coming back," Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani told the Doha Forum for political dialogue. He spoke as a source close to the Hamas delegation in the talks told AFP that a new round of negotiations will "most likely" begin in the coming week. Sheikh Mohammed said that while there were "some differences" in the approach to an agreement by the outgoing and incoming US administrations, "we didn't see or recognise any disagreement on the goal itself to end the war". He said there had been "a lot of encouragement from the incoming administration in order to achieve a deal, even before the president comes to the office", adding this had affected Qatar's decision to get talks "back on track". "We hope to get things done as soon as possible. We hope that the willingness of the parties to engage in a good faith continues," he said. The source close to the Hamas delegation, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP: "Based on contacts with the mediators, we expect a new round of negotiations to begin in Cairo, most likely this week, to discuss ideas and proposals regarding a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange." The source added that Turkey, as well as Egypt and Qatar, had been "making commendable efforts to stop the war". In a statement later on Saturday, the group said Turkish spy chief Ibrahim Kalin met with a Hamas delegation in Doha to discuss the war in Gaza. The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,208 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures. During the attack, militants kidnapped 251 people, 96 of whom remain in Gaza, including 34 declared dead by the Israeli military. Israel's retaliatory military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 44,664 people, a majority civilians, according to figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry which the UN considers reliable. The US president-elect this week warned on social media of unspecified massive repercussions if the hostages were not released by the time he takes office next month. Trump has vowed staunch support for Israel and to dispense with outgoing President Joe Biden's occasional criticism, but has also spoken of his desire to secure deals on the world stage. On Saturday, Qatar's premier dismissed the prospect of his country facing greater pressure over the status of the Hamas political bureau, which the Gulf state has hosted since 2012 with Washington's blessing. Sheikh Mohammed called the Hamas office a "platform to convene between the different parties". Qatar was not "expected to enforce solutions" on the Palestinian militants, he added. csp/srm/dcp/it
has become a victim of his own success with various cricketing nations concocting a plan to dismiss him. Various techniques such as yorkers, bouncers and targeting the corridor of uncertainty have all tried and failed to regularly dismiss him but the key to the 35-year-old's wicket was far more simple, bowl at his body. Smith's eye, technique and temperament have long been his biggest assets and he is undoubtedly one of the greatest to ever do it. The batsman from a leg-spinning all-rounder to scoring the fourth most runs in Australian Test history. But he is in a funk. The 35-year-old currently averages 56.09 - his lowest since 2016. And in his last nine innings, he has averaged 17.4, having made just 157 runs. His decline, however, coincides with a plan developed to take away his free-flowing off-side game, by bowling at his body. The tactic saw him dismissed cheaply twice in the first Test against India and again he was undone by the plan, tickling one down leg side that wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant caught with ease on Saturday. His two off 11 balls looked to the naked eye as a man out of form but it is as much that as it is a specialised game plan working. In Smith’s battling 11-ball stay, he let just one ball go wide of off-stump and lobbed an edge through the cordon just before he fell as the Indians zeroed in on his middle and leg stump, fully testing his defence off both feet. And when he knicked off down leg, said Smith simply can't catch a break. “(It is a) horrible way to get out. (That is) terrible for a batsman," Lee said in Fox Cricket commentary. “I mean, you play that shot 1000 times and you might nick one that fine. You have to play that shot. You are committed to playing that stroke because you can’t let it hit you. It’s just bad luck,” he said. “He just needs (some) good luck. We saw the dismissal from the first innings in Perth where he stepped across and his head looked really still. Steve Smith is a busy cricketer. But it was that extra bit of movement he was doing walking across the crease. But he looked like he tightened that up today and I thought he was in for a big one. It was a bit of bad luck, which happens, but you don’t change your style. That’s just the rub of the green.” However, former Indian coach Ravi Shastri, says the dismissal was anything but lucky. Instead, Shastri says it was a result of a specialised game plan to target his leg stump and body. “You imagine the batsman feels he’s unlucky but it’s a plan. It is a tactic they have used against Smith and it has paid off,” Shastri said. It is a point Isa Guha agreed with as well. “A lot of opposition teams do set that plan to him, so I don’t think they would have been too surprised about it,” she said. “The angle that’s created, you always feel like you’re in the game if you are Jasprit Bumrah because of the extra bounce that he gets, so it was excellent work from Rishabh Pant to be aware of that." And it is not like Smith hasn't identified his weakness. says the Aussie batsman has made big changes to his stance to try and rectify his recent dismissals. The legendary Aussie fast bowler said on ABC radio that Smith had adopted a new plan and stance after Perth, opting to stand still rather than shuffle across the crease towards the off-side. But it still didn;t stop India from executing their plan. When Smith was on top of the cricketing world, he would immediately take a big step across with his back foot planting it outside off and opening his body up to an array of shots. However, after bowlers began to target his body and front leg, Smith saw he was being dismissed lbw more and more. So now he has tinkered further with his stance and it is far more conventional. However, he still isn't getting the freedom to play to his strengths and credit must be given to bowling outfits, especially India, for that. While Smith is still adapting and plotting ways to improve, he needs to find a way to deal with a leg-side attack if he is to break out of his funk.

This release was published on openPR.BEIRUT (AP) — Insurgents' stunning march across Syria accelerated Saturday with news that they had reached the gates of the capital and that government forces had abandoned the central city of Homs. The government was forced to deny rumors that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria’s coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader’s base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria’s third-largest city, without elaborating. Rami Abdurrahman who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said Syrian troops and members of different security agencies have withdrawn from the city, adding that rebels have entered parts of it. The capture of Homs is a major victory for insurgents, who have already seized the cities of Aleppo and Hama , as well as large parts of the south, in a lightning offensive that began Nov. 27. Analysts said Homs falling into rebel hands would be a game-changer. The rebels' moves around Damascus, reported by the monitor and a rebel commander, came after the Syrian army withdrew from much of southern part of the country, leaving more areas, including several provincial capitals, under the control of opposition fighters. For the first time in the country’s long-running civil war, the government now has control of only three of 14 provincial capitals: Damascus, Latakia and Tartus. The advances in the past week were among the largest in recent years by opposition factions, led by a group that has its origins in al-Qaida and is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the United Nations. In their push to overthrow Assad's government, the insurgents, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, or HTS, have met little resistance from the Syrian army. The rapid rebel gains, coupled with the lack of support from Assad's erstwhile allies, posed the most serious threat to his rule since the start of the war. The U.N.’s special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, on Saturday called for urgent talks in Geneva to ensure an “orderly political transition.” Speaking to reporters at the annual Doha Forum in Qatar, he said the situation in Syria was changing by the minute. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose country is Assad's chief international backer, said he feels “sorry for the Syrian people.” In Damascus, people rushed to stock up on supplies. Thousands went to Syria's border with Lebanon, trying to leave the country. Many shops in the capital were shuttered, a resident told The Associated Press, and those still open ran out of staples such as sugar. Some were selling items at three times the normal price. “The situation is very strange. We are not used to that,” the resident said, insisting on anonymity, fearing retributions. “People are worried whether there will be a battle (in Damascus) or not.” It was the first time that opposition forces reached the outskirts of Damascus since 2018, when Syrian troops recaptured the area following a yearslong siege. The U.N. said it was moving noncritical staff outside the country as a precaution. Assad's status Syria’s state media denied social media rumors that Assad left the country, saying he is performing his duties in Damascus. He has had little, if any, help from his allies. Russia, is busy with its war in Ukraine . Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which at one point sent thousands of fighters to shore up Assad's forces, has been weakened by a yearlong conflict with Israel. Iran has seen its proxies across the region degraded by regular Israeli airstrikes. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media that that the United States should avoid engaging militarily in Syria. Pedersen said a date for talks in Geneva on the implementation a U.N. resolution, adopted in 2015, and calling for a Syrian-led political process, would be announced later. The resolution calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body, followed by the drafting of a new constitution and ending with U.N.-supervised elections. Later Saturday, foreign ministers and senior diplomats from eight key countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, along with Pederson, gathered on the sidelines of the Doha Summit to discuss the situation in Syria. In a statement issued late Saturday, the participants affirmed their support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis “that would lead to the end of military activity and protect civilians.” They also agreed on the importance of strengthening international efforts to increase aid to the Syrian people. The insurgents' march Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents were in the Damascus suburbs of Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya. Opposition fighters were marching toward the Damascus suburb of Harasta, he added. A commander with the insurgents, Hassan Abdul-Ghani, posted on the Telegram messaging app that opposition forces had begun the “final stage” of their offensive by encircling Damascus. HTS controls much of northwest Syria and in 2017 set up a “salvation government” to run day-to-day affairs in the region. In recent years, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani has sought to remake the group’s image, cutting ties with al-Qaida, ditching hard-line officials and vowing to embrace pluralism and religious tolerance. The shock offensive began Nov. 27, during which gunmen captured the northern city of Aleppo, Syria’s largest, and the central city of Hama , the country’s fourth largest city. Opposition activists said Saturday that a day earlier, insurgents entered Palmyra, which is home to invaluable archaeological sites had been in government hands since being taken from the Islamic State group in 2017. To the south, Syrian troops left much of the province of Quneitra including the main Baath City, activists said. Syrian Observatory said government troops have withdrawn from much of the two southern provinces. The Syrian army said in a statement that it carried out redeployment and repositioning in Sweida and Daraa after its checkpoints came under attack by “terrorists." The army said it was setting up a “strong and coherent defensive and security belt in the area,” apparently to defend Damascus from the south. The Syrian government has referred to opposition gunmen as terrorists since conflict broke out in March 2011. Diplomacy in Doha The foreign ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey, meeting in Qatar, called for an end to the hostilities. Turkey is a main backer of the rebels. Qatar's top diplomat, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, criticized Assad for failing to take advantage of the lull in fighting in recent years to address the country’s underlying problems. “Assad didn’t seize this opportunity to start engaging and restoring his relationship with his people,” he said. Sheikh Mohammed said he was surprised by how quickly the rebels have advanced and said there is a real threat to Syria’s “territorial integrity.” He said the war could “damage and destroy what is left if there is no sense of urgency” to start a political process. ____ Karam reported from London. The University of Maine held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new outdoor track, soccer and basketball facilities on Saturday. The new soccer facility and outdoor track should be ready sometime next October while the multi-purpose Morse Arena, which will be home to the two basketball programs, has a target date of the 2027-28 season, according to University of Maine Athletic Director Jude Killy. A $170 million gift from the Harold Alfond Foundation for facilities upgrades and other multi-million dollar donations are paying for the construction. New Balance Athletics donated $7 million toward the track and soccer field and Phil and Susan Morse provided a $10 million commitment for the multi-purpose arena. Killy said construction on the track and soccer fields is expected to begin right after Thanksgiving and the entire project will cost “a little bit north of $20 million.” The track will not circle the soccer field. They will be separate venues with the soccer field oriented north and south behind Mahaney Diamond while the track will run east to west behind the field hockey facility, according to Killy. “We hope to have the track operational in some capacity next fall and be ready for the spring of 2026 and we are shooting for the soccer field to be ready in October but I have no idea whether it will be Oct. 1 or Oct. 30,” said Killy. “We’d like to play as many home games as possible.” The reigning two-time America East women’s soccer championship team has been playing on Mahaney Diamond for several years. It will have a press box, scoreboard, lights and seating for 500 which include chairback and bleacher seats. A new field hockey facility and softball complex have already been built in the past three years with money from the Harold Alfond Foundation gift. The Morse Arena should be ready during the 2027-28 season but Killy said he would love to see it be open for the start of the campaign. Both basketball teams currently play in the antiquated Memorial Gym, which was built in 1933. Killy said the new arena will cost in the vicinity of $80 million and will seat approximately 2,500. “We are currently in the schematic design phase for the arena,” said Killy. Killy noted that the $45 million renovation to Alfond Arena has been going along well and he is hoping that will be completed by the end of the 2025 calendar year. Killy said he feels grateful to all the donors who have come forward to improve the facilities at UMaine and to UMaine System Chancellor Dannel Malloy and President Joan Ferrini-Mundy and the UMaine Board of Trustees for their support. “Everybody is aligned about what we want from athletics and how it can help the university,” said Killy. “I feel really fortunate to have them believe in us and support us.”

WASHINGTON — American Airlines briefly grounded flights nationwide Tuesday because of a technical problem just as the Christmas travel season kicked into overdrive and winter weather threatened more potential problems for those planning to fly or drive. Government regulators cleared American flights to get airborne about an hour after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a national ground stop for the airline. The order, which prevented planes from taking off, was issued at the airline's request. The airline said in an email that the problem was caused by trouble with vendor technology that maintains its flight operating system. An American Airlines employee wearing looks toward quiet check-in counters Tuesday in the American terminal at Miami International Airport in Miami. Dennis Tajer, a spokesperson for the Allied Pilots Association, a union representing American Airlines pilots, said the airline told pilots at 7 a.m. Eastern that there was an outage affecting the system known as FOS. It handles different types of airline operations, including dispatch, flight planning, passenger boarding, as well as an airplane's weight and balance data, he said. Some components of FOS have gone down in the past, but a systemwide outage is rare, Tajer said. Flights were delayed across American's major hubs, with only 37% leaving on time, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics company. Out of the 3,901 domestic and international American Airlines flights scheduled for Tuesday, 19 were canceled. Cirium noted that the vast majority of flights departed within two hours of their scheduled departure time. A similar percentage — 36% — arrived at their destinations as scheduled. Meanwhile, the flight-tracking site FlightAware reported that 4,058 flights entering or leaving the U.S., or serving domestic destinations, were delayed, with 76 flights canceled. The site had not posted any American Airlines flights on Tuesday morning, but showed in the afternoon that 961 American flights were delayed. Cirium said Dallas-Fort Worth, New York's Kennedy Airport and Charlotte, North Carolina, saw the greatest number of delays. Washington, Chicago and Miami experienced considerably fewer delays. Travelers wait in line for security checks Tuesday at the Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles. Amid the travel problems, significant rain and snow were expected in the Pacific Northwest at least into Christmas Day. Showers and thunderstorms developed in the South. Freezing rain was reported in the Mid-Atlantic region near Baltimore and Washington, and snow fell in New York. Because the holiday travel period lasts weeks, airports and airlines typically have smaller peak days than they do during the rush around Thanksgiving, but the grind of one hectic day followed by another takes a toll on flight crews. Any hiccups — a winter storm or a computer outage — can snowball into massive disruptions. That is how Southwest Airlines stranded 2 million travelers in December 2022, and Delta Air Lines suffered a smaller but significant meltdown after a worldwide technology outage in July caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Many flights during the holidays are sold out, which makes cancellations even more disruptive than during slower periods. That is especially true for smaller budget airlines that have fewer flights and fewer options for rebooking passengers. Only the largest airlines, including American, Delta and United, have "interline agreements" that let them put stranded customers on another carrier's flights. An American Airlines employee wearing a Santa Claus hat walks through the American terminal Tuesday at Miami International Airport in Miami. This will be the first holiday season since a Transportation Department rule took effect that requires airlines to give customers an automatic cash refund for a canceled or significantly delayed flight. Most air travelers were already eligible for refunds, but they often had to request them. Passengers still can ask to get rebooked, which is often a better option than a refund during peak travel periods. Finding a last-minute flight on another airline tends to be expensive. An American spokesperson said Tuesday was not a peak travel day for the airline — with about 2,000 fewer flights than the busiest days — so the airline had somewhat of a buffer to manage the delays. The groundings happened as millions of travelers were expected to fly over the next 10 days. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 40 million passengers through Jan. 2. Airlines expect to have their busiest days on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. American Airlines employees check in travelers Tuesday in the American terminal at Miami International Airport in Miami. Many flights during the holidays are sold out, which makes cancellations more disruptive than during slower periods. Even with just a brief outage, the cancellations have a cascading effect that can take days to clear up. About 90% of Americans traveling far from home over the holidays will be in cars, according to AAA. "Airline travel is just really high right now, but most people do drive to their destinations, and that is true for every holiday," AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz said. Gasoline prices are similar to last year. The nationwide average Thursday was $3.04 a gallon, down from $3.13 a year ago, according to AAA. Charging an electric vehicle averages just under 35 cents per per kilowatt hour, but varies by state. Transportation-data firm INRIX says travel times on the nation's highways could be up to 30% longer than normal over the holidays, with Sunday expected to see the heaviest traffic. "It's not the destination, it's the journey," said American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ralph clearly was not among the travellers on one of more than 350 cancelled or 1,400 delayed flights after a worldwide tech outage caused by an update to Crowdstrike's "Falcon Sensor" software in July of 2023. U.S. airlines carried nearly 863 million travellers in 2023, with Canadian carriers accounting for another 150 million, many of whom experienced lost luggage, flight delays, cancellations, or were bumped off their flights. It's unclear how many of them were compensated for these inconveniences. Suffice it to say, posting a crabby rant on social media might temporarily soothe anger, but it won't put wasted money back in pockets. Money.ca shares what to know in order to be compensated for the three most common air travel headaches. Bags elected to go on a vacay without you? Check off the following: If you expect a large payout, think again. Tariffs (air carrier contracts) limit the compensation amounts for "loss of, damage to, or the delay in delivery of baggage or other personal property." In the case of Air Canada, the maximum payout is $1,500 per passenger in the currency of the country where the baggage was processed. To raise that limit, purchase a Declaration of Higher Value for each leg of the trip. The charge is $0.50 for each $100, in which case the payout limit is $2,500. For Delta Air Lines, passengers are entitled to up to $3,800 in baggage compensation, though how much you'll receive depends on your flight. Delta will pay up to $2,080 for delayed, lost, and damaged baggage for international travellers, almost half of what U.S. domestic passengers can claim. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. Different air carriers and jurisdictions have their own compensation policies when flights are delayed or cancelled. For example, under European Union rules, passengers may receive up to 600 Euros, even when travelling on a non-EU carrier. Similarly, the DOT states that travellers are entitled to a refund "if the airline cancelled a flight, regardless of the reason, and the consumer chooses not to travel." However, US rules regarding delays are complicated. Some air carriers, such as Air Canada, do not guarantee their flight schedules. They're also not liable for cancellations or changes due to "force majeure" such as weather conditions or labour disruptions. If the delay is overnight, only out-of-town passengers will be offered hotel accommodation. Nevertheless, many airlines do offer some compensation for the inconvenience. If your flight is marked delayed for more than 30 minutes, approach the gate agent and politely request food and hotel vouchers to be used within the airport or nearby. In terms of cash compensation, what you'll get can differ significantly based on things like departure location, time, carrier, and ticket class. The DOT offers a helpful delay and cancellations dashboard designed to keep travellers informed about their compensation rights. The dashboard is particularly helpful because, as the DOT states on its website, "whether you are entitled to a refund depends on a lot of factors—such as the length of the delay, the length of the flight, and your particular circumstances." The Canadian Transportation Agency is proposing air passenger protection regulations that guarantee financial compensation to travellers experiencing flight delays and cancellations, with the level of compensation varying depending on the situation and how much control the air carrier had. The proposed regulations include the following: The airline is obligated to complete the passenger's itinerary. If the new ticket is for a lower class of service, the air carrier would have to refund the cost difference; if the booking is in a higher class of service, passengers cannot be charged extra. If the passenger declines the ticket, the airline must give a full refund, in addition to the prescribed compensation. For overnight delays, the air carrier needs to provide hotel accommodation and transportation free-of-charge. Again, if you are unsatisfied, the Canadian Transportation Agency or Department of Transportation may advocate on your behalf. Passengers get bumped because airlines overbook. When this happens, the air carrier must compensate you. For international flights in the US, the rate is 200% of your one-way fare to your final destination, with a $675 maximum. If the airline does not make travel arrangements for you, the payout is 400% of your one-way fare to a maximum of $1,350. To qualify, you must check-in by the stated deadline, which on international flights can be up to 3 hours ahead. Keep in mind that if you accept the cash, you are no longer entitled to any further compensation, nor are you guaranteed to be rebooked on a direct flight or similar type of seat. Don't be too quick to give up your boarding pass. Negotiate for the best compensation deal that would include cash, food and hotel vouchers, flight upgrade, lounge passes, as well as mileage points. But avoid being too greedy—if the gate attendant is requesting volunteers and you wait too long, you'll miss the offer. According to Air Canada's tariff, if a passenger is involuntarily bumped, they'll receive $200, in cash or bank draft, for up to a two-hour delay; $400 for a 2-6 hours delay; and $800 if the delay is over six hours. (Air Canada was forced to raise its payouts in 2013 due to passenger complaints.) The new rules would raise the payout significantly: $900 for up to six hours; $1,800 for 6-9; and $2,400 for more than nine hours, all to be paid within 48 hours. Statistically speaking, Delta Airlines is the carrier most likely to bump. A few years ago, Delta raised its payout maximum to $9,950, while United Airlines tops out at $10,000. Zhang Anda fired his third career 147 and Stuart Bingham dredged up an improbable 6-5 win over Mark Williams amid “unplayable” accusations on an incident-packed day at the UK Snooker Championship in York. Zhang made his maximum in the fourth frame of his eventual 6-3 win over Chinese compatriot Lei Peifan, just hours after Judd Trump and Neil Robertson had blasted the table conditions following Trump’s win over the Australian by the same score. Bingham then extended the evening’s drama by recovering from a 5-2 deficit to beat Welshman Williams, despite a howler at the start of the 10th frame of the match when he somehow contrived to pot the black from his own break-off shot. Zhang, whose maximum was described as “perfect” by Eurosport commentator Ronnie O’Sullivan, will pocket at least a share of the tournament’s £15,000 highest break prize, eclipsing the 146 achieved by Zhao Xintong in the qualifying rounds. His brilliant break was in sharp contrast to the struggle faced by Trump in the opening stages of his clash with Robertson, a three-time UK winner who had battled through two rounds of qualifying after falling out of the world’s top 16. Trump belatedly found his form with consecutive breaks of 73, 126 and 67 helping him reel off five straight frames that kept alive his hopes of winning the prestigious title for the first time since 2011. Asked in his post-match interview if they were the worst conditions in which he had played, Trump said: “I’ve played in some bad conditions, but that was close. “It’s disappointing as it seems to be the bigger events. It was very heavy all the time. I’ve always struggled here because the tables are so heavy. “Hopefully they can change them. All the players have been struggling – hopefully they can do something about it.” Robertson, who made himself a heavy favourite to progress into the last 16 before a missed red on the cusp of extending his lead to 4-1 changed the course of the match, was equally scathing of the environment. “That was as tough as I’d ever played on,” said the Australian, a former three-time winner. “It was as unplayable as it gets in professional conditions. “Being such a tough sport anyway it can make either player look stupid.” Bingham’s early woe against Williams put even Trump’s travails into perspective as the 2015 world champion fashioned a top break of just 26 as he headed to the interval trailing 3-1. And despite falling further behind at 5-2, Bingham somehow managed to summon enough momentum to force a decider against the stuttering Williams, surviving even his break-off blunder before taking his first chance in the decider to book his place in the last 16. Earlier, veteran John Higgins rolled back the years as he completed a 6-0 whitewash of China’s He Guoqiang, who was making his Barbican debut. Scotsman Higgins, a four-time world champion, signalled his intent with early breaks of 110 and 92 before further extending his advantage into the interval. Two more half-century runs saw the 49-year-old comfortably into the last 16. “I am very pleased. The first two frames I knew it would be a tough game for him,” Higgins told BBC Sport. “It is a great atmosphere, I was nervous as well, but I got off to a decent start and I just put the pressure on him. “When I play like that, I feel like I am a match for anyone.”

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Australia’s House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill that would ban children younger than 16 years old from social media , leaving it to the Senate to finalize the world-first law. The major parties backed the bill that would make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) for systemic failures to prevent young children from holding accounts. The legislation was passed with 102 votes in favor to 13 against. If the bill becomes law this week, the platforms would have one year to work out how to implement the age restrictions before the penalties are enforced. Opposition lawmaker Dan Tehan told Parliament the government had agreed to accept amendments in the Senate that would bolster privacy protections. Platforms would not be allowed to compel users to provide government-issued identity documents including passports or driver’s licenses. The platforms also could not demand digital identification through a government system. “Will it be perfect? No. But is any law perfect? No, it’s not. But if it helps, even if it helps in just the smallest of ways, it will make a huge difference to people’s lives,” Tehan told Parliament. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the Senate would debate the bill later Wednesday. The major parties’ support all but guarantees the legislation will be passed by the Senate where no party holds a majority of seats. Lawmakers who were not aligned with either the government or the opposition were most critical of the legislation during debate on Tuesday and Wednesday. Criticisms include that the legislation had been rushed through Parliament without adequate scrutiny, would not work, would create privacy risks for users of all ages and would take away parents’ authority to decide what’s best for their children. Critics also argue the ban would isolate children, deprive them of positive aspects of social media, drive children to the dark web, make children too young for social media reluctant to report harms they encountered and take away incentives for platforms to make online spaces safer. Independent lawmaker Zoe Daniel said the legislation would “make zero difference to the harms that are inherent to social media.” “The true object of this legislation is not to make social media safe by design, but to make parents and voters feel like the government is doing something about it,” Daniel told Parliament. “There is a reason why the government parades this legislation as world-leading, that’s because no other country wants to do it,” she added. T he platforms had asked for the vote on legislation to be delayed until at least June next year when a government-commissioned evaluation of age assurance technologies made its report on how the ban could been enforced. North Melbourne will receive the premiership cup from an 11-year-old girl in a touching gesture should the Kangaroos prevail in Saturday night’s AFLW grand final. The Kangaroos announced on Wednesday that the honour would go to Good Friday game ambassador Imogen Mulgrew after she had left a “profound” impact on the club’s players and staff this year. Kangaroos Bella Eddey and Emma King joined Imogen earlier this month for her special “ring the bell” moment as she celebrated the end of 21⁄2 years’ treatment for leukaemia at the Royal Children’s Hospital. It came as Brisbane announced retiring defender and 2021 premiership player Kate Lutkins would present the cup to the Lions after she called time on her career on Tuesday. Imogen Mulgrew, 11, will present the premiership cup to North Melbourne if the Kangaroos win the AFLW grand final at Ikon Park on Saturday night. Picture: Quinn Rooney / Getty Images Imogen tossed the coin in the AFL Good Friday match earlier this year and remained involved with the Kangaroos, with chief executive Jen Watt lauding her effect on the club. “Imogen’s resilience, spirit and easy-go-lucky demeanour struck a chord with our players, our football department, our staff and all footy fans far and wide this past year,” Watt said. “Not only has Imogen’s impact been profound, she represents everything our team stands for and we couldn’t think of a more perfect person for this role.” Lutkins, an inaugural Lion, made three All-Australian teams and won the club’s best and fairest in her second season as she rapidly established herself as a premier key defender in the competition. After a break from the game last season to welcome her first child, the 36-year-old returned for the first time since the 2022 grand final loss to Melbourne to play in the first two games of the season. Champion Brisbane defender Kate Lutkins will present the cup to the Lions after announcing her retirement on Tuesday. Picture: Albert Perez / Getty Images “Kate has been one of the best to pull on a Lions guernsey and on the back of her recent retirement we see this as a great way to acknowledge her contribution to the game,” Lions boss Greg Swann said. “Kate has been integral part of what we’ve built at this club from an AFLW point of view and to have her present the cup to Craig (Starcevich) and Bre (Koenen), who have both been here for the whole journey, would be a special moment for this footy club.” Lutkins said she was “incredibly honoured and humbled” to present the cup if the Lions claimed back-to-back flags under lights at Ikon Park. “I think it will be one of my proudest football moments handing that cup to Bre and Craig if they win on Saturday,” she said. NoneCalgary is getting its second blast of winter in less than a week. Weather warnings have been issued across southern Alberta for 15 to 25 centimetres of snow this weekend on the heels of the season’s first big snowfall Nov. 18. Light snow started this morning, though heavier precipitation will begin in earnest on Nov. 23 and end by Nov. 24. This latest bout of snow forced clearing crews in Calgary to reset their snow plan to focus on “priority 1s” and “priority 2s,” plowing and de-icing major business routes, meaning “priority 3” residential zones will stay wet for a while longer. While city snowplows tackle most of the majors roads, some highways and parts of Calgary’s ring road remain partly covered in snow. The prairie snowstorm could cause drivers to experience sudden, reduced visibility, and highways and road surfaces could be difficult to drive because of the growing pile of snow, Environment Canada said. Accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres will form Nov. 22 amid bursts of heavy snow. Nov. 23 will bring the lion’s share of snowfall with 10 to 15 centimetres expected, before tapering off in the evening. This second bout of winter weather began Nov. 21, when a low pressure zone triggered a “bomb cyclone” system that lashed parts of B.C. before moving further east. The storm hit Southern Alberta and is expected to spread northward through the province. Not everyone is complaining about the sudden wintry weather, though. After a delayed snow season due to warmer-than-usual temperatures, Calgary-based WinSport stated it will open its skiing facilities soon. The sporting non-profit put off its planned Nov. 22 opening due to the mild conditions, but is set to welcome skiers to hit the slopes on Nov. 29.

On Saturday, a stellar performance by India's fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who secured his 11th five-wicket haul, led to Australia's dismissal for a mere 104. This left India with a 46-run lead by lunch on the second day of the first test in Perth. Day one of the match saw 17 wickets fall, as India, too, was bowled out for 150. However, Bumrah's inspired bowling helped India gain momentum, leaving Australia struggling at 67-7 by stumps. Debutant Harshit Rana supported the attack, claiming crucial wickets early on day two. Mitchell Starc provided some resistance with a fighting 26-run inning but eventually fell victim to Rana's pace, bringing an end to Australia's innings. The partnership of Starc and Josh Hazlewood added 25 runs, but India maintained control thanks to their bowling prowess. Social media accounts began posting about the outage around 1:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, which coincided with a surge of reports to Down Detector . The company confirmed the outage in a blog post at 2 p.m. ET stating, “we are currently experiencing an issue with high error rates on ChatGPT, the API, and Sora. We are currently investigating and will post an update as soon as we are able.” OpenAI provided that update just 18 minutes later, explaining that, “this issue is caused by an upstream provider and we are currently monitoring.” Just after 3 p.m. ET, the company added, “we are continuing to work on a fix for this issue,” though there is currently no timeline for when service might be restored. OpenAI has suffered similar outages in the past few months. ChatGPT was knocked offline in a widespread outage in June that also impacted Google Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, and Perplexity. Earlier in December, the Sora video generation model ran into “technical difficulties” just days after its release to Plus and Pro subscribers . In both cases, the company was able to resolve those respective issues within a few hours. This outage comes on the heels of the company’s “12 Days of OpenAI ” event that saw the release of numerous new products, including the full version of its o1 reasoning model (plus a teaser for its successor, called o3 ), as well as the Sora text-to-video model, and new capabilities for its Canvas and Advanced Voice Mode features.
Steep price hikes could be on the way if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on his pledge to impose sweeping new tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China. He threatened to implement the tariffs on the country’s top three trading partners on his first day back in office, including a 10% tariff on products from China. In a pair of social media posts, he explained the decision as a way to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs. “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States,” he said. “It is time for them to pay a very big price!” Ultimately, consumers could end up absorbing the brunt of those costs. When tariffs are levied on imports, American companies have to pay taxes to the U.S. government on their purchases from other countries; the companies often pass on those extra costs to customers. “This is a bully effort to put everybody on notice,” said economist Chris Thornberg, founding partner of Beacon Economics in Los Angeles. “One of the reasons he uses tariffs is because it’s one of the few places that he actually has some leverage.” Though Thornberg noted it’s still a “giant remains-to-be seen” whether and how Trump’s proposed tariffs are implemented, consumer goods across the board could be dramatically affected. Here are a few top categories: Mexico was the U.S.’s top goods trading partner last year, surpassing China. Mexico is a major manufacturer of passenger vehicles, light vehicles, trucks, auto parts, supplies and electric-vehicle technologies. Eighty-eight percent of vehicles produced there are exported, with 76% headed for the U.S., the International Trade Administration says. Automakers with manufacturing operations in Mexico include General Motors, Ford, Tesla, Audi, BMW, Honda, Kia, Mercedes Benz, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen. “If we get tariffs, we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer,” Phil Daniele, chief executive of AutoZone, said in the company’s most recent earnings call. “We’ll generally raise prices ahead of ... what the tariffs will be.” Last year, China accounted for 77% of toy imports — about 25 times greater than the total value of toy imports from Mexico, the next largest foreign source of supply, according to the National Retail Federation. U.S. producers account for less than 1% of the toy market. The federation recently released a study that found the tariffs Trump proposed during his campaign — a universal 10% to 20% tariff on imports from all foreign countries and an additional 60% to 100% tariff on imports specifically from China — would apply to a wide range of toys imported into the U.S., including dolls, games and tricycles. “Prices of toys would increase by 36% to 56%,” the study concluded. The National Retail Federation study also analyzed more than 500 items of clothing and found prices “would rise significantly” — as much as 20.6%. That would force consumers to pare spending on apparel. Low-income households would be hit especially hard, the group said, because they spend three times as much of their after-tax income on apparel compared with high-income households. “U.S. apparel manufacturers would benefit from the tariffs, but at a high cost to families,” the study said. “Even after accounting for domestic manufacturing gains and new tariff revenue, the result is a net $16 billion to $18 billion loss for the U.S. economy, with the burden carried by U.S. consumers.” Imported footwear products already face high U.S. duties, particularly those made in China. The Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America expressed concern that new tariffs would make it more difficult for consumers to afford shoes and other everyday essentials. Trump’s proposed tariffs would increase the costs of several imported fruits and vegetables, said Jerry Nickelsburg, faculty director of UCLA Anderson Forecast, an economic forecasting organization. The vast majority of U.S. produce imports come from Mexico and Canada, including avocados, cucumbers, potatoes and mushrooms. The U.S. spent $88 billion on agricultural imports from the two countries in fiscal year 2024. Big-ticket electronic products such as televisions, laptops, smartphones, dishwashers and washing machines — many of which are manufactured in Mexico and China, or made with parts imported from those countries — likely would become more expensive. The U.S. imported $76 billion worth of computers and other electronics from Mexico in 2023, and more than a quarter of U.S. imports from China consist of electronic equipment. NoneCompanies embracing artificial intelligence (AI) are pulling ahead of competitors, with Bridgeline ’s HawkSearch reporting new customers each week, IBM finding open-source AI users seeing higher returns, and MIT research showing advanced AI adopters outperforming industry peers. However, a Q4 loss at Bridgeline highlighted the sector’s uneven growth path. Bridgeline Reports AI Growth Despite Mixed Q4 Results AI-powered marketing technology firm Bridgeline reported that HawkSearch, its AI-powered search product, drove significant growth in 2024, despite posting a quarterly net loss of $432,000. The company launched five new AI products under its HawkSearch brand and noted new customer installations nearly every week throughout the year. The company rolled out a conversational search feature powered by generative AI, as well as smart tools for analyzing PDF content. “HawkSearch is the leader in AI-powered product discovery,” Bridgeline CEO Ari Kahn said in the release. “This year we nearly doubled our sales contracts and had better than 103% net revenue retention for HawkSearch.” Total revenue for Q4 reached $3.9 million, up slightly from $3.8 million in the same period last year. The company reported signing 83 new license sales in fiscal 2024, adding $2.1 million in annual recurring revenue. Bridgeline enters 2025 with what it calls the largest sales pipeline in company history, driven by growing demand for AI-enhanced search capabilities among eCommerce and B2B customers. Companies See ROI From Open-Source AI Companies using open-source AI tools are seeing better returns on their investments than those that don’t, according to a Dec. 19 IBM study . The global survey of over 2,400 IT decision-makers found that 51% of companies using open-source AI reported positive returns, compared to 41% of those not utilizing open-source AI. The study indicates a growing shift toward open-source adoption, with 48% of companies planning to leverage these tools in 2025. Despite ongoing economic uncertainties, 89% of organizations plan to maintain or increase AI investments next year. Nearly two-fifths of those increasing spending expect to boost their AI budgets by 25-50%. “Companies continue to rapidly advance their AI strategies, with no sign of slowing down,” Maribel Lopez , of Lopez Research , who collaborated on the study, said in a release. “They are leveraging hybrid cloud strategies and open source to drive AI innovation.” The research revealed that companies are focusing their AI investments primarily on IT operations, with 63% of respondents citing it as their top priority, followed by data quality management at 46%. MIT Study Links AI Adoption to Higher Company Performance Companies with advanced AI capabilities tend to perform better financially than industry peers, according to research released by MIT ’s Center for Information Systems Research . The study of 721 companies found that organizations in the two highest stages of AI maturity reported above-average financial performance, while those in earlier stages performed below industry averages. Only 7% of surveyed companies were at the the highest “AI future ready” stage, where AI is embedded in decision-making processes. Most enterprises remain in early development, with 28% in the experimental phase and 34% building pilot programs. “Enterprises can use the MIT CISR Enterprise AI Maturity Model to assess their current capabilities, identify gaps and create a roadmap for improvement,” Stephanie Woerner , MIT Sloan principal research scientist and MIT CISR director, said in the release. The research team, led by Woerner, Peter Weill and Ina Sebastian , developed the model based on survey data and interviews with executives at nine companies. Their findings suggest enterprises should take decisive action in developing AI capabilities, regardless of their current stage.
Republican lawmakers are calling on U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration to preserve documents related to the proposed sale of United States Steel to Japan-based Nippon Steel, expressing "serious concerns” that politics have tainted an ongoing national security review of the deal and raising the prospect of a congressional probe. Four House Republicans wrote to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on Friday, saying that recent developments related to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) "have called into question the integrity of its decision-making process,” and demanding the preservation of records related to the steel transaction. The matter raises "broader issues about whether the statutory mandate of CFIUS to prioritize national security considerations has been subordinated to political interests,” the lawmakers wrote, according to a copy of the letter obtained by Bloomberg News. The documents should "remain intact and available for any forthcoming oversight needs,” the letter, from some members of the House Financial Services Committee, adds.Bavarian Loan Works: Alexander Nübel earns another cap, Bryan Zaragoza scored first for Spain

More info Copenhagen boss Jacob Neestrup has fired back at Hearts counterpart Neil Critchley ’s penalty moan - branding it “ridiculous” and insisting his side would have won Thursday’s Euro tie regardless. Critchley blasted ref Andrea Colombo over his decision to award the Danes a 78th minute spot kick after a VAR review of Craig Gordon ’s challenge on Amin Chiakha. Kevin Diks netted from 12 yards to make the score 2-0. Furious Critchley dubbed the decision “really poor” and said it torpedoed his plan to throw everything at a late leveller. However, home boss Neestrup shot down that suggestion and said: “I think it's a penalty. Amin touched the ball and then the goalie... there’s a collision. “To be honest, as I said to the Danish journalists, I think it's ridiculous to talk about that penalty because it was not decisive for the game. As the game went on, we would have won that game nine out of 10 times anyway.” Hearts now need to beat Moldovans Petrocub in Gorgie on Thursday to secure a play off spot for the last 16. A draw might be enough. But they were second best to a classy Copenhagen outfit who jumped above them in the table thanks to the win in the Parken Stadium. Neestrup said: “With all respect, I think we have total control of the game from second one to the last second. We expected maybe that there would be a little bit more bite back, but that's not a disrespect for Hearts. An amazing club, by the way, and a great team, but I just think that we kept ourselves on an extremely high level and showed the difference that has to be between FC Copenhagen and Hearts. “But do you know what? This game we played today has been exactly the same in our two previous home games against Jagiellonia and Istanbul. But for some reason we have only managed to get one point. But it's actually been exactly the same game picture. So we needed those three points today because we have lost five in our two home games before that.”Adagio Therapeutics stock hits 52-week low at $0.72Kansai International Airport, situated near Osaka, Japan , is an engineering wonder and one of the globe's most remarkable air hubs, constructed at a staggering cost of $20.9 billion. The airport, entirely built on a man-made island in Osaka Bay , serves as a significant international gateway to the Kansai region, encompassing cities such as Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe. Constructed on an artificial island approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) long and 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) wide, the airport stands as a testament to human ingenuity, reports Daily Express UK. After six years of construction, which included creating the island and constructing the terminal and runways, it opened its doors in 1994. In September 1998, the airport weathered a typhoon with wind speeds exceeding 60m per second. However, in September 2018, the airport was struck by Typhoon Jebi. Operations had to be halted after seawater surges flooded the island. Runways were affected, and the water rose to the engines of some aircraft. Despite the devastation caused by the natural disaster, the airport managed to resume partial operations within days. Designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons, common occurrences in the region, the airport incorporates advanced seismic and wave-resistance technologies. However, the airport faces another challenge: the island it was built on is sinking due to the soft clay seabed. This issue, foreseen during planning, is being addressed through ongoing adjustments and reinforcements. Enhanced protective measures, like seawalls, have been implemented to shield against flooding worsened by subsidence. The sinking rate has considerably decelerated since the airport was built, due to engineering efforts and natural stabilisation. Nonetheless, it continues to be a persistent issue in the long run.
By JILL COLVIN NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump wants to turn the lights out on daylight saving time. In a post on his social media site Friday, Trump said his party would try to end the practice when he returns to office. “The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation,” he wrote. Setting clocks forward one hour in the spring and back an hour in the fall is intended to maximize daylight during summer months, but has long been subject to scrutiny. Daylight saving time was first adopted as a wartime measure in 1942. Lawmakers have occasionally proposed getting rid of the time change altogether. The most prominent recent attempt, a now-stalled bipartisan bill named the Sunshine Protection Act , had proposed making daylight saving time permanent. The measure was sponsored by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio , whom Trump has tapped to helm the State Department. Some health groups , including the American Medical Association and American Academy of Sleep Medicine, have said that it’s time to do away with time switches and that sticking with standard time aligns better with the sun — and human biology. Later in the day, a school spokesman told reporters that Armstrong will skip the Razorbacks' bowl game. The destination isn't yet known. Armstrong led the Southeastern Conference in both receptions (78) and receiving yards (1,140) but caught just one touchdown in 11 games this season. His catches and yardage were both second-most in Arkansas history behind Cobi Hamilton, who had 90 receptions for 1,335 yards in 2012. "It's been a journey for the books and I wouldn't trade it for anything because it has made me into the man I am today," Armstrong said of his Razorbacks tenure in a social media post. "... I will never forget all the moments that were shared here in Fayetteville." Armstrong played two seasons at Texas A&M-Commerce before transferring to Arkansas ahead of the 2023 season. In two seasons with the Razorbacks, he caught 134 passes for 1,904 yards and six scores. --Field Level Media

Ducks limp into Columbus with 5-game losing streakWashington (CNN) — Victims of major public corruption cases in Pennsylvania and Illinois are angry that President Joe Biden granted clemency this week to two convicted officials. The commutations were announced Thursday as part of a historic clemency package for 1,500 convicted criminals who, the White House said, “deserve a second chance.” The two convicted officials whose cases sparked outrage – a crooked Pennsylvania judge and a notorious Illinois fraudster – were both released from prison early and put on house arrest, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Biden’s actions now end that punishment. The president has already faced bipartisan criticism over his highly controversial pardon of his son Hunter Biden, who was convicted earlier this year of 12 tax and gun crimes. CNN has reached out to the White House for comment on the commutations. Former Pennsylvania Judge Michael Conahan was convicted in 2011 in what was infamously called the “kids-for-cash” scandal , where he took kickbacks from for-profit detention centers in exchange for wrongly sending juveniles to their facilities. The case was widely considered to be one of the worst judicial scandals in Pennsylvania history. Like all of the other nearly 1,500 people who got commutations from Biden this week, Conahan was freed from prison due to Covid. His house arrest was set to end in 2026. The misconduct of Conahan and another Luzerne County judge led the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to throw out 4,000 juvenile convictions, and the discredited state judges were ordered to pay $200 million to the victims, according to the Associated Press . Sandy Fonzo – the mother of Edward Kenzakoski, who died by suicide after spending time behind bars as part of the kickback scheme – said she was “shocked... and hurt” after learning of Biden’s decision to commute the rest of Conahan’s punishment. “Conahan‘s actions destroyed families, including mine, and my son‘s death is a tragic reminder of the consequences of his abuse of power,” Fonzo told the Citizens’ Voice, a local outlet. “This pardon feels like an injustice for all of us who still suffer. Right now I am processing and doing the best I can to cope with the pain that this has brought back.” Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, also said Friday at an unrelated news conference in Biden’s hometown of Scranton that, “I do feel strongly that President Biden got it absolutely wrong and created a lot of pain here in northeastern Pennsylvania.” There was similar fallout in Illinois, after Biden gave clemency to Rita Crundwell , the former comptroller of Dixon, a city of roughly 15,000 in the northern part of the state. She pleaded guilty in 2012 to a $54 million embezzlement scheme, which was believed to be the largest municipal fraud in US history. She was sentenced to almost 20 years in prison, nearly the maximum, though she moved to house arrest during the pandemic. She was supposed to be on house arrest until 2028, according to the Bureau of Prisons. “When I heard the news, I was completely shocked in disbelief, I was outraged and felt a complete sense of betrayal from the federal justice system, the White House and the president,” Dixon city manager Danny Langloss told CNN in an interview on Friday. Langloss, who said he doesn’t affiliate with a political party, was the police chief when Crundwell’s fraud was uncovered. He said he believes “justice wasn’t served here.” “I don’t like the idea ... that with several more years of her sentence to complete, she gets to walk free in the community that she betrayed and stole from,” Langloss said. Margaret Love, who served in the Justice Department as the US pardon attorney from 1990 to 1997, said the fallout from Biden’s latest commutations was a consequence of how the prison population was reduced during Covid – under the Trump administration. Congress passed the bipartisan CARES Act in March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, which, among other things, paved the way for the federal government to move about 12,000 inmates from federal prisons into home confinement. Many of these people have since completed their sentences, though plenty remain on house arrest. “Many people who were sent home were convicted of white-collar or nonviolent offenses and were considered safe bets to behave in the community,” Love said, adding that she believed the decision-making was tainted by racial discrimination. With grumblings among some Republicans about sending these convicts back to prison, Love said Biden “simply cleaned out this population” and took that option off the table. And to those upset that Biden let these criminals out of house arrest early, “you should have complained four years ago when they were released from prison,” Love said. Defiant Adani says committed to compliance after US indictmentBRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WV News) — Gene Taylor Dodd, 73, of Bridgeport, passed away at his home on Tuesday afternoon, December 3, 2024. He was born in Maysville, KY on March 9, 1951, a son of the late Gene Austin Dodd and Phyllis Wallingford Dodd. He is survived by his son, Gene W. (G.W.) Dodd; his daughter, Abby (Dodd) Davis and her husband Sam, all of Bridgeport; his granddaughters, Abigail Davis, a student at WVU; Ava Davis of Bridgeport; his grandson, Ashton Davis of Bridgeport; his sister Janice (Dodd) Schultz and her husband Gary of Bridgeport; his brother, Gary Dodd and his wife Amy (Reep) Dodd of Bridgeport; his sister-in-law, Stephen's widow, Heide Dodd of Stuart, FL; 10 nieces and nephews; and 14 great-nieces and nephews, and his favorite companion, his German Shepherd, Lucy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children and former wife, Melissa Stout Dodd; and his brother Stephen Dodd. Gene was a graduate of Bridgeport High School, Class of 1969, and attended Potomac State College from 1969-1971. He graduated from Fairmont State College in 1974 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Secondary Social Studies Education. He was a life-long member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church. After graduating from college, Gene owned and operated one bar, Dr. John's, in Morgantown, WV, and Northwood Supper Club near Maple Lake in Bridgeport. Gene was a hard worker and had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. He decided to leave the restaurant/bar business and go into the asphalt paving business. In 1978, Gene, along with his brother Steve (Stephen) Dodd, began Dodd General Contractors. They began the business going door to door asking residents if they needed any gravel or asphalt work on their driveways. Also, Gene's youngest brother, Gary Dodd, worked alongside his older brothers and helped run Dodd General Contractors. Through blood, sweat, and tears Gene and his brother Steve built up their paving business and did paving contract work throughout North Central WV from the Ohio River area east to the Mountain counties of WV. They even owned and operated their own asphalt plant on the banks of the Ohio River in the late 1990s/early 2000s. He owned and operated Dodd General Contractors until he retired in 2018. Gene was an avid amateur Civil War historian. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Civil War in general and specifically the Civil War in WV. He enjoyed trips to Civil War Battlefields. Every year he took his children to the Gettysburg Battlefield to explore and instill in them his love of history. His favorite location to visit was Key West, Florida. He worked hard all year long so that he could spend his winters in Key West. Gene's favorite spot in Key West was Sloppy Joe's bar. Gene went to Key West for over 25 years. He frequented Sloppy Joe's every night during his trips, so much so that all of the staff knew and loved Gene. He was a Sloppy Joe's bar fixture. Gene's greatest loves were his children, grandchildren, his son-in-law, Sam Davis, the 4th of July, and his house that he designed and built himself. Most evenings you would find Gene sitting on his front porch at his high-top table, feeding the wild deer and turkeys on his property, watching the sunset behind the hills, and enjoying a nice cold beer. Those who knew Gene T. Dodd never forgot him. He was his own man and his own character. A type of man someone does not forget. Gene was strong-willed and stubborn, but lovable. Gene lived his life by his own rules, and he did until the day he died. One of his favorite sayings to friends and family was, "What's wrong with ya?" This meant grab a beer and let's talk about the events of the day and of the world. When he passed, his family, his friends, Bridgeport, WV, and Key West, Florida lost one of its most interesting and independent people. Gene is now with his brother and best friend Steve, enjoying the warmth of a Key West sunset and the cool and refreshing taste of a beer. Cheers! Gene's family would also like to thank his caregivers, Rhonda Vincent, Stephanie Montgomery, and Becky McAtee. Not only did they give Gene superb care, but they also became part of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association West Virginia Chapter, P.O. Box 18485, South Charleston, WV 25303. Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home, 607 S. Virginia Avenue, Bridgeport, on Monday from 4-8 p.m., where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, with Reverend Dr. Matthew Paugh presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery. Burnside Funeral Home, Bridgeport

The Importance of Insider Transactions It's important to note that insider transactions alone should not dictate investment decisions, but they can provide valuable insights. When discussing legal matters, the term "insider" refers to any officer, director, or beneficial owner holding more than ten percent of a company's equity securities, as stipulated in Section 12 of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. This includes executives in the c-suite and significant hedge funds. Such insiders are required to report their transactions through a Form 4 filing, which must be completed within two business days of the transaction. A new purchase by a company insider is a indication that they anticipate the stock will rise. On the other hand, insider sells may not necessarily indicate a bearish view and can be motivated by various factors. JOHNSON CONTROLS ANNOUNCES QUARTERLY DIVIDENDGovernors of deep blue states are scrambling and jockeying to craft their narrative to Donald Trump’s election-winning deportation message, with varying results. Thus far, California’s governor is attempting to become the anti-Trump opposition leader, as Massachusetts’s top executive is softening her state’s sanctuary status, and even Illinois’ leftist goveror is suddenly supporting the idea of deporting “criminals.” These Democrats are all pushing what former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich calls an “act of insurrection” against the legally elected president of the United States. Last month, Gingrich blasted the threats made by Denver’s extremist mayor that he would use his city police department as his own personal Confederate Army troops to physically oppose officers of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Gingrich pointed out that “The mayor of Denver doesn’t seem to understand that the United States Army settled the question of states, counties and cities defying the federal government in a meeting at Appomattox in 1865 when General Lee surrendered.” The Democrats are grasping for ways to respond to Trump, nonetheless, and no dominant narrative has yet emerged. Probably unsurprisingly, with images of the White House dancing in his head, radical, left-wing California Gov. Gavin Newsom is attempting to set himself up as the chief resistance to Trump’s deportation plans. This week, just before Christmas, Newsom announced that he would begin looking for ways to help illegals evade federal authorities in a blatant attempt to thwart Donald Trump from fulfilling his campaign pledge to launch the biggest deportation campaign in U.S. history. Newsom’s extremist regime pushed out a memo entitled “Immigrant Support Network Concept,” which proposed regional hubs to “connect at-risk individuals, their families, and communities with community systems — such as legal services, schools, labor unions, local governments, etc.,” Fox News reported. Not only is Newsom looking to create entire bureaucracies geared toward evading federal law, he also pledged to throw $25 million in tax dollars into efforts to “Trump proof” the state by funding every way his Democrats can devise to shield illegals from ICE, and he also called a special legislative session to push the policy. The entire scheme is clearly Newsom’s way to be seen as the face of Trump opposition in preparation for a run for the White House in 2028. Meanwhile, in the center of the nation, Illinois’ left-wing Gov. J.B. Pritzker found himself a sudden fan of deporting “criminal” illegals. A few weeks before Trump’s massive election victory, Pritzker seemed to see the writing on the wall and tried to walk a finer line by insisting that “violent criminals” should be deported, but all other illegals should be protected. On the other hand, he also tried to burnish his opposition bona fides by claiming he would oppose “raids” to round up illegals. “We also just want to make sure there isn’t a violation of people’s rights with ... raids ... that are done in coordination [with] local law enforcement,” he said the week after Trump’s election. “We think that’s improper and in Illinois, that’s not something that we would condone.” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also tried to fudge her past blatant support for illegals by adopting some tougher sounding verbiage. As the country turned to favor President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to deport illegal aliens, Hochul performed an about-face last month when she claimed during a press conference that she favors deporting illegals accused of or convicted of crimes. “If someone breaks the law, I’ll be the first one to call up ICE and say, ‘Get them out of here,’” the sanctuary state governor exclaimed. Yet, despite Hochul’s tougher talk, her Democrat-dominated legislature went the Newsom way by introducing legislation to make it even harder to deport illegals from New York. In contrast, the Democrat governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey, made as if to sound like a sudden hardliner on migrants. Healey seemed to backpedal on her state’s status as a “sanctuary” for illegals in not one, but two interviews, where she flat out said that the Bay State is “not a sanctuary state.” Healey made this startling claim in interviews with the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald in which Healey not only said her state is not a sanctuary state, but said she will work with the feds to deport illegals, and would reduce the amount spent on sheltering illegals. This despite the fact that Massachusetts has enshrined in its laws a “right to shelter” for anyone who is homeless and without a place to stay. But speaking of this “right,” she told the Globe , “My view is that the law was never intended to apply to the circumstance that we’ve been dealing with the last couple of years here, people coming from other states.” “We are not a sanctuary state,” she continued, “and we simply do not have a means to house people.” Healey is throwing $856 million in tax dollars at shelters for illegals, which is still a budget cut from the expected $932 million. And Healey says more cuts will be coming to spending on migrants. Healey also told the Herald that she thinks state and local jurisdictions should work with the feds to deport “criminal” migrants from the state. Despite that turnaround, Healey is not suggesting that the state or its counties and cities cancel their rules preventing police officers from working with ICE, so it is not exactly clear how she expects criminal illegals to be deported if she does not back police agencies working with the feds to do so. It is likely that more of a consensus on responding to Trump’s policies will come together after the 47th President actually puts his machinery in place to begin the deportation process. But right now, Democrat governors are floating trial balloons on the issue.
