CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ten yards into a scramble, Patrick Mahomes could have easily slid for a first down or simply ducked out of bounds and moved on to the next play. Instead, the three-time Super Bowl MVP cut back inside and raced another 23 yards up the field, helping to set up Spencer Schrader's 31-yard field goal as time expired as the Chiefs held on to beat the Carolina Panthers 30-27 on Sunday. “At that point, yards are more important than getting out of bounds,” Mahomes said. “With three timeouts, I just tried to just cut through and Justin Watson had a great block and was able to get down the field and get out of bounds.” The game-winning drive was the 21st of Mahomes' career, and the Chiefs won a game decided in the final seconds for the fifth time this season. Eight of the Chiefs' wins have come by one-score margins. “You always want to have some blowouts and be a little calmer in the fourth quarter, but I've always said it could be a good thing when you get to the playoffs later in the season knowing that you have been in those moments before, and knowing how to attack it play by play not making it too big of a moment,” Mahomes said. Then he smiled and said: “But I would say this more than anybody, I would love to win a game not by the very last play.” Mahomes completed 27 of 37 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns in his first game at Bank of America Stadium and ran for 60 yards — including 33 on that last-minute play — as the Chiefs (10-1) scored on six of their eight possessions. Noah Gray caught four passes for 66 yards and scored two touchdowns for the second straight week, and DeAndre Hopkins also found the end zone for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Kareem Hunt ran for 68 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 19 yards. Bryce Young played well for Carolina (3-8), finishing 21 of 35 for 262 yards and a touchdown while leading the Panthers back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on Chuba Hubbard's 1-yard touchdown run and 2-point conversion with 1:46 remaining. Panthers coach Dave Canales, who benched Young earlier this season for veteran Andy Dalton, said last year's No. 1 overall draft pick “absolutely” will remain the team's starting QB next week. That's a break from Canales' recent pattern of waiting a few days to name a starter. “Bryce is certainly making the most of his opportunities,” Canales said. “And he is making a statement to all of us. Showing us he can make plays in critical areas. He did a great job extending today.” Said Young: “For me, I just want to focus on what I can control. Regardless, I always have the same mindset and preparation, wanting to be better throughout the week. I am definitely grateful for confidence.” Still, there is room for improvement. The Panthers moved the ball well but struggled in the red zone, resulting in field goals of 30, 32, 29 and 33 yards for Eddy Pineiro, the most accurate kicker in NFL history. The Chiefs wasted no time setting the tone as Samaje Perine returned the opening kickoff 56 yards and Mahomes found Gray for a 35-yard touchdown strike on the third play of scrimmage for a 7-0 lead. Gray went nine games without a TD catch before hauling in two last week against Buffalo. His 11-yard score late in the second quarter gave him two more against the Panthers . Chiefs coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes' poise but said he was concerned about his team's nine penalties for 90 yards. Moving on up Kansas City's Travis Kelce had six catches for 62 yards and moved into third place in career yards receiving by a tight end. He ranks behind only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten. However, Kelce failed to find the end zone for the ninth time in 11 games this season. Brooks' debut Running back Jonathan Brooks made his NFL debut for Carolina, but the second-round pick was limited to 7 yards on two carries. Injuries Panthers: Rookie TE Ja'Tavion Sanders was taken to a hospital, where he was evaluated for a neck injury and released . He landed awkwardly on his head after making a catch near the end of the second quarter. Up next Chiefs: Host Las Vegas on Friday. LEXINGTON, Va. — East Tennessee State reached its goal of a winning season with a hard-fought 16-9 victory at Virginia Military Institute on Saturday afternoon. It was a stated goal of ETSU football coach Tre Lamb in his first season as the Bucs improved to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the Southern Conference. The Keydets finished their season at 1-11, 1-7. The Bucs reached seven wins for the 11th time in program history. Lamb joined Paul Hamilton in 1997 and Randy Sanders, who won eight games in 2018, as first-year ETSU coaches to reach the number. “It has been a great season. We put this team together in January, a group of misfits — people from ETSU, from Gardner-Webb, from other places and high school players,” Lamb said on the post-game radio broadcast. “I was really proud of the way we meshed and were able to overcome mistakes. To get seven wins, that was big in the locker room for us.” Freshman Baylor Hayes made his first start of the season at quarterback. But, it was special teams and defense which came through with the biggest plays when needed. Parker Self blocked Ben Shrewsbury’s punt in the second quarter and the Bucs recovered at the VMI 17-yard line. Six plays later, Bryson Irby scored the game’s only touchdown on a 1-yard run. ETSU linebackers William McRainey and Cody Goatley defense stopped VMI on a 4th-and-2 on the ETSU 18 with 7:39 left in the game. Later, Hayes pinned VMI back at their own 2-yard line on a quick kick and the Bucs defense held one more time to seal the victory. Lamb said he didn’t realize what a good punter Hayes was until one of the assistant coaches told him about his soccer background. The coach wasn’t surprised the game went down to the wire. “I knew it was going to be a nail-biter, a low-scoring, close game,” Lamb said. “This team (VMI) has been in a lot of games. Playing a true freshman quarterback, I wasn’t going to take a lot of chances in the second half and put the ball in danger. Any time at VMI, it’s hard to get a win up here.” Hayes, who became the first ETSU freshman quarterback to start a game since Greg Ryan in Nov. 1993, completed 15 of 25 passes for 119 yards to seven different receivers. Most importantly, he didn’t turn the ball over after the Bucs had 20 interceptions coming into the game. Lamb was proud the Bucs had just one penalty and one turnover. “He got us in and out of checks, and we had no pre-snap penalties,” Lamb said about Hayes. “He threw the ball on the perimeter and made the right call against their blitzes. To the average fan it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but if you hand it off into a blitz, that’s a negative play. A mature player understands the play needs to go to the other side, which doesn’t show up on the stat sheet.” Devontae Houston rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries, the second game in a row he surpassed the 100-yard mark. Irby had 53 rushing yards and the touchdown. The Bucs ended with 195 rushing yards on 45 carries. Karim Page was the leading receiver with four catches for 39 yards to go along with four special teams tackles. VMI quarterback JoJo Crump ran up the middle 39 yards on the opening drive to put the Keydets in scoring position. They capitalized with a 39-yard field goal by Caden Beck for the 3-0 lead. The Bucs tied the game with a 9-play, 50-yard drive capped off by Ewan Johnson’s 22-yard field goal. ETSU strung together a 54-yard drive at the end of the first half. Johnson capped off the drive as time expired for a 13-3 halftime lead. ETSU scored on the opening drive of the second half as Johnson booted his third field goal, this one for 40 yards and a 16-3 lead. VMI responded with a pair of 48-yard field goals by Beck, one set up by a 54-yard run by Crump. Crump had 126 passing yards on 11 carries, but just 62 passing yards. BOONE ALUMNI Shrewsbury, a Daniel Boone High School graduate, had five punts for 195 yards, a 39-yard average. He had two punts, which the Bucs called fair catches and pinned them inside the 20 on another occasion. He also was the holder on Beck’s field goals. Defensive lineman Luke Scott, also a Boone alum, finished with two tackles. VMI’s defensive leaders were Eric Rankin with 16 tackles and Shamus Jones with 15. Ray Coney led the ETSU defense with eight tackles, while McRainey finished with seven tackles.Stock futures were flat in overnight trading Sunday evening ahead of the last few trading sessions of 2024. Australia's cap on foreign students pushes Indians to explore alternativesCOLUMBUS, Ohio — Will Howard passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another, TreVeyon Henderson ran for a score and No. 2 Ohio State beat previously undefeated No. 5 Indiana 38-15 on Saturday. All Ohio State (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten) has to do now is beat Michigan at home next Saturday and it will earn a return to the Big Ten championship game for the first time since 2020 and get a rematch with No. 1 Oregon. The Ducks beat Ohio State 32-31 in a wild one back on Oct. 12. The Hoosiers (10-1, 7-1) had their best chance to beat the Buckeyes for the first time since 1988 but were hurt by special teams mistakes and disrupted by an Ohio State defense that sacked quarterback Kurtis Rourke five times. “In life, all good things come to an end,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said. Late in the first half, Indiana punter James Evans fumbled a snap and was buried at his own 7-yardline with the Buckeyes taking over. That turned quickly into a 4-yard TD run by Henderson that gave the Buckeyes a 14-7 lead. Early in the second half, Caleb Downs fielded an Evans punt at the Ohio State 21, raced down the right sideline, cut to the middle and outran the coverage for a touchdown that put the Buckeyes up 21-7. It was the first time a Buckeye returned a punt for a touchdown since 2014. Howard finished 22-for-26 passing for 201 yards. Emeka Egbuka had seven catches for 80 yards and a TD. “Our guys just played with a chip today, and that’s the way you got to play the game of football,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. Indiana scored on its first possession of the game and its last, both short runs by Ty Son Lawson, who paced the Hoosiers with 79 rushing yards. Rourke was 8-for-18 passing for 68 yards. “We had communication errors, pass (protection), every time we dropped back to pass, something bad happened,” Cignetti said. Indiana’s 151 total yards was its lowest of the season. And it was the most points surrendered by the Hoosier’s defense. The Hooseries’ special season was blemished by the Buckeyes, who beat Indiana for the 30th straight time. The Hoosiers were eyeing its first conference crown since sharing one with two other teams in 1967. That won’t happen now. “Ohio State deserved to win,” Cignetti said. “They had those (third quarter scores), and we just couldn’t respond.” Ohio State didn’t waste the opportunities presented by the Hoosiers when they got sloppy. The Buckeyes led 14-7 at the break and took control in the second half. An offensive line patched together because of multiple injuries performed surprisingly well. “We know what was at stake,” Day said. “We don’t win this game, and we have no chance to go to Indianapolis and play in the Big Ten championship. And that’s real. We’ve had that approach for the last few weeks now, more than that.”
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Tens of thousands of Spaniards marched in downtown Barcelona on Saturday to protest the skyrocketing cost of renting an apartment in the popular tourist destination. Protesters cut off traffic on main avenues in the city center, holding up homemade signs in Spanish reading “Fewer apartments for investing and more homes for living" and “The people without homes uphold their rights.” The lack of affordable housing has become one of the leading concerns for the southern European Union country, mirroring the housing crunch across many parts of the world, including the United States . Organizers said that over 100,000 had turned out, while Barcelona’s police said they estimated some 22,000 marched. Either way, the throngs of people clogging the streets recalled the massive separatist rallies at the heigh of the previous decade’s Catalan independence movement. Now, social concerns led by housing have displaced political crusades. That is because the average rent for Spain has doubled in last 10 years. The price per square meter has risen from 7.2 euros ($7.5) in 2014 to 13 euros this year, according to the popular online real estate website Idealista. The growth is even more acute in cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Incomes meanwhile have failed to keep up, especially for younger people in a country with chronically high unemployment. Protestor Samuel Saintot said he is “frustrated and scared” after being told by the owners of the apartment he has rented for the past 15 years in Barcelona’s city center that he must vacate the premises. He suspects that the owners want him out so they can renovate it and boost the price. “Even looking in a 20- or 30-kilometer radius outside town, I can’t even find anything within the price range I can afford,” he told The Associated Press. “And I consider myself a very fortunate person, because I earn a decent salary. And even in my case, I may be forced to leave town.” A report by the Bank of Spain indicates that nearly 40% of Spaniards who rent dedicate an average of 40% of their income to paying rents and utilities, compared to the European Union average of 27% of renters who do so. “We are talking about a housing emergency. It means people having many difficulties both in accessing and staying in their homes,” said Ignasi Martí, professor for Esade business school and head of its Dignified Housing Observatory. The rise in rents is causing significant pain in Spain, where traditionally people seek to own their homes. Rental prices have also been driven up by short-term renters including tourists. Many migrants to Spain are also disproportionately hit by the high rents because they often do not have enough savings. Spain is near the bottom end of OECD countries with under 2% of all housing available being public housing for rent. The OECD average is 7%. Spain is far behind France, with 14%, Britain with 16%, and the Netherlands with 34%. Carme Arcarazo, spokesperson for Barcelona’s Tenants Union which helped organize the protest, said that renters should consider a “rent strike” and cease paying their monthly rents in a mass protest movement. “I think we the tenants have understood that this depends on us. That we can’t keep asking and making demands to the authorities and waiting for an answer. We must take the reins of the situation,” Arcarazo told the AP. “So, if they (the owners) won’t lower the rent, then we will force them to do it." The Barcelona protest came a month after tens of thousands rallied against high rents in Madrid. The rising discontent over housing is putting pressure on Spain’s governing Socialist party, which leads a coalition on the national level and is in charge of Catalonia’s regional government and Barcelona’s city hall. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez presided over what the government termed a “housing summit” including government officials and real estate developers last month. But the Barcelona’s Tenants Union boycotted the event, saying it was like calling a summit for curing cancer and inviting tobacco companies to participate. The leading government measure has been a rent cap mechanism that the central government has offered to regional authorities based on a price index established by the housing ministry. Rent controls can be applied to areas deemed to be “highly stressed” by high rental prices. Catalonia was the first region to apply those caps, which are in place in downtown Barcelona. Many locals blame the million of tourists who visit Barcelona, and the rest of Spain, each year for the high prices. Barcelona’s town hall has pledged to completely eliminate the city’s 10,000 so called “tourist apartments,” or dwellings with permits for short-term rents, by 2028.Jeeno Thitikul makes late charge to catch Angel Yin in the LPGA finaleThe Vanderbilt Commodores , led by quarterback Diego Pavia , face the LSU Tigers , led by quarterback Garrett Nussmeier on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024 (11/23/24) at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. Police said the tractor had been reported stolen earlier that morning. A witness stopped at an intersection recorded video of the tractor chase coming to an end. A police chase in Louisiana this week ended with officers arresting a suspect who was fleeing on a tractor. Police in the parish of Vermilion got a call around 9 a.m. Nov. 19 about a tractor that had been stolen. Authorities located the tractor and attempted a traffic stop, but said the driver wouldn’t pull over for quite some time. A witness stopped at an intersection filmed video of the chase coming to an end. "They’re goin’ on a high-speed chase in a tractor," a man and a woman can be heard saying off camera. "How far you getting with that?" the woman wondered. Police say the suspect drove through three small towns before he stopped and was arrested. At one point, police said the suspect tried to run one of the officers off the road. Police didn’t specify how fast the suspect drove. Former US president Jimmy Carter dies aged 100Whakatāne District Youth Council members were heartbroken to discover that their murals had been targeted by a tagger but are determined not to let the culprit defeat them. Just days after Whakatāne High School Mural Club, working in collaboration with the youth council and Keep Whakatāne Beautiful Committee, finished its latest mural and painting of the tunnel at River Edge Park Miniature Railway, they discovered it had been covered in graffiti. Fortunately, the mural at Whakatāne Rose Gardens, titled Te Mahi Tahi a ngā Taiohi - A Youth Collaboration- Balloon Dog for the Community, had been treated with Graffiti Shield so was able to be cleaned. But just last weekend they discovered the same tagger had struck again, going over the same tags with permanent marker. Because of the roughness of the surface of the concrete tunnel, the marker has proved difficult to clean. Youth councillor and mural club member Nate Parsons said it was annoying because they had wanted to enter the work in the Rangatahi Emerging Artists Competition being organised by Ngāti Awa Social and Health Services and Community Action on Youth and Drugs. "We will still enter our two murals, Te Mahi Tahi a ngā Taiohi and the one we did in Kopeopeo, Puawaitanga, but there's no point in entering this and having people come to have a look at it and see it covered in graffiti." He said it took about 12 students three full days of work to complete the mural so it had been disheartening to see it tagged. That had been after weeks of work planning and designing the painting. They would be seeking advice on the best way to remove or cover the marker. Because their paint had been covered by Graffiti Shield paint he was not sure whether they would be able to paint over it without the paint washing off. "Once we have that worked out, we will just keep covering it up every time they do it so they don't get the satisfaction of having their tag on there." The mural club had not yet finished with the railway site. They still have plans to paint the concrete retaining walls leading into the tunnel. AI Legal Mate Revolutionizing Legal Aid for Disabled Students & Military Veterans (AI119 YK2K Evolution - Henry Nanpei Academy Project) AI Legal Mate Revolutionizing Legal Aid for Disabled Students & Military Veterans (AI119 YK2K Evolution - Henry Nanpei Academy Project) www.ailegalmate.com WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AI LEGAL MATE As previously reported , AI Legal Mate has filed its Gen AI 'Law and Health' technology utility patent updates, utilizing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and quantum computing. QM-Ware is designed exclusively for remote and physical users, and will continue to be under (nonpartisan) exploration delegations with organizations like the Veterans Recovery Network , The Gaygency , Fugees Lives Matte PAC , The Trump S.A.F.E. Act - Department of Government Efficiency 2025, SMART Recovery Network , and Harvard I-Labs. The AI Legal Mate launched a project to assist disabled Harvard students in civil rights actions concerning overly 'X'd up Harvard degrees, and military veterans at the Veterans Recovery Network seeking settlement claims through the PACT Act Relief programs. With quantum computing, AI Legal Mate works as an ultimate API conduit between a pro-bono law client and live attorneys and AI Law technicians to handle batches of similarly situated claimants within a shorter time than a well-staffed civil rights organization with a dozen or more attorneys. AI PATENT TECH NEWS AI119 Tech's propel development team has filed a second utility patent update application for their 'third generation' AI Law and Health technology, designed similar to military ISACs established in the late-90s. This technology uses quantum computer technology under Grover's algorithms for quantum-error corrections in human-driven transactions. The newer version of AI119's technology is capable of resolving tens of thousands of administrative complaint cases within a few days by integrating live attorneys with AI Law resources and SOC-2 applications to certify legal documents. AI Legal Mate's next generation plan is to complete its fifth-generation technology with innovative lab affiliates, including their "QM-ware" approach, which aims to integrate AI with assistive technology like earbuds, eye-ware, wrist-ware , head-ware , and body-ware to enable adaptive learning at 'meta-speed. ' This will empower users to receive treatment or training for mental health disabilities or professional skills through peer-to-peer transmission of Generative AI at meta-speeds . Culantro, on the other hand, well, some people don't even know what it is. Though they share some flavor qualities, culantro and cilantro aren't the same plant. Cilantro is coriander, an annual herb that grows best in cooler climates. Culantro is recao, a tropical biennial herb popular in Latin America, the Caribbean, and many Asian countries – particularly Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. It goes by a few other names: saw leaf herb, fitweed, ngò gai, and shado beni to name a few. It's easy enough to tell the two apart when you know what you're looking for, since they look virtually nothing alike. Visually, cilantro has small, paddle-shaped frilly leaves, while culantro has long leaves with spiky edges. Culantro also has a stronger, more pungent flavor than cilantro. Many describe it as having a citrusy zest, tasting like parsley and a touch of cilantro. For those who don't think eating cilantro is like chowing down on a bar of soap thanks to their genes (it was for that reason), it tastes refreshing and peppery, with a hint of parsley and lemon. The best ways to use culantro and cilantro Cilantro certainly seems like the more well-traveled herb, as it's difficult to get your hands on culantro if you don't have a specialty grocery store nearby. But both cilantro and culantro pack flavorful punches that work well in many dishes, making them each worth trying. Typically, you use cilantro in salads, soups, curries, salsas, and as a garnish. Culantro often stars in soups and sauces, but people also mix it into beans, rice, chutneys, marinades, and sofritos. Don't use it fresh like you would cilantro. Adding it to cooking meats, stews, and stocks like you would with onion or garlic is the best way to extract its flavor. As far as recipes go, this zingy is perfect for tossing on all your favorite sauce vehicles with reckless vigor — pizza, chicken wings, or tacos anyone? These feature cilantro in various components and have a juicy, savory oomph that'll leave your taste buds craving another bite before you're even through with your first. Meanwhile, culantro takes center stage in this , a savory and faintly fruity dish that makes use of the mild flavor of partially ripened mangoes. It also shines in this from St. Croix that checks all the boxes — it is savory, herbaceous, and has just a bit of kick expected of the island's cuisine. As long as you aren't cursed with the cilantro soap gene, you'll find either herb an absolute mealtime win. Recommended
