Chelsea Manning, trans rights activists protest at Capitol, GOP lawmaker uses slurMary Fowler posts telling message as she takes a mental health break away from her Matildas teammates Has opted not to play in four friendlies in Australia Cited mental health and physical fatigue for the break Has shared a message to her supporters on social media By JOSH ALSTON FOR DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA Published: 23:32, 5 December 2024 | Updated: 23:32, 5 December 2024 e-mail View comments Just days after the Matildas notched up a much-needed win against Chinese Taipei, Australian forward Mary Fowler has posted a social media dump including a very telling message. The Manchester City star is currently taking time away from the sport, citing mental and physical fatigue . She missed both of the Matildas losses to Brazil and Wednesday night's win over Chinese Taipei, and will not suit up for tonight's match. Fowler is in Australia, spending time with friends, family and partner Nathan Cleary and posted a series of photos to Instagram on Friday. They included her relaxing on the beach in a bikini, hiking through a rainforest and reading the book 'What I Wish I'd Known When I Was Young' by political columnists Rachel Sylvester and Alice Thomson. It also included a message that appears to a screenshot that reads: 'Life is better when you decide your worth is not a group decision'. Matildas star Mary Fowler has opted to not play in the four friendlys in Australia citing mental and physical fatigue The Matildas striker posted this message along with images of her recharging while back in Australia The Matildas have struggled without Fowler, but found an unconvincing win over Chinese Taipei The post also didn't include any images with Cleary, but one of Fowler's followers confirmed they were together during her break. 'I saw you and Nathan pick up your Brother and Sister (I think) from Varsity Station and it was great to see you both relaxed and happy,' they posted. 'As a fan to see you spending valuable time with your loved ones, transcends the sport really. Best wishes for the season with City.' The Matildas have come under fire for a string of poor results since crashing out of Paris Olympics contention earlier in the year. Australian football legend Andy Harper recently said the team was having issues playing without Fowler and star striker Sam Kerr , while interim coach Tom Sermanni has warned the Matildas have not planned well enough for the future . While the national side is sorely missing Fowler, especially in the absence of Kerr, her followers have praised her strength for taking the time to heal. 'A great example on and off the field. Walking the walk and pushing pause when you need. Breathe. Picture perfect,' one posted. 'Love love your photos they are so healing and grounding,' added another. Fowler enjoys some cuddles with Nathan Cleary's dog Prince while on her downtime from the national team Fowler will not play in the Matildas final friendly against Chinese Taipei on Saturday night 'Good to see you are taking some time out to recharge. Take care of yourself,' posted yet another. Cleary is also spending time away from his sport, recovering from off-season shoulder surgery before returning to training after Christmas. He has been spending time with Fowler on her break and has posted plenty of photos to social media of his love. The Matildas will play their fourth and final friendly match in Australia against Chinese Taipei on Saturday at 6:30pm AEDT. Only a team beset by perpetual problems at quarterback for the better part of two decades can get a record-setting 497-yard, four-touchdown, jaw-dropping, where-did-that-come-from performance on Monday night from Jameis Winston — and still lose. History wrapped in misery. Only the Browns. Winston spoiled a high-level performance in Denver's thin air by throwing a pair of pick-sixes — the second with 1:48 remaining — as the Broncos rode big plays to a 41-32 win over the Browns (3-9), who have to wonder what their disappointing season might look like if Deshaun Watson had been benched before getting hurt. The loss ended any illusions the Browns had of making a late playoff push like they did a year ago. It also clinched the team's 22nd losing season since its expansion rebirth in 1999. In his fifth start this season, Winston provided further evidence that the Browns made a major mistake by not switching QBs long before Watson ruptured his Achilles tendon on Oct. 20 against Cincinnati. Cleveland's offense has come alive behind Winston, who has thrown for over 300 yards three times, something Watson didn't do in 19 starts over his three suspension-shortened, injury-riddled seasons with the Browns. While there were some positives, Winston's turnovers were too costly. "You’re not going to play perfect at the quarterback position. He knows that," coach Kevin Stefanski said Tuesday on a Zoom call. “I know that ultimately he wants to do anything in his power to help this team win and that’s going to be taking care of the ball. But he also had moments there where he was moving that offense and did a nice job.” Winston may not be the long-term answer for the Browns, but he's showing he can at least give them a viable option for 2025 while the club sorts through the tangled Watson situation, which continues to have a stranglehold on the franchise. In all likelihood, and assuming he's fully recovered, Watson will be back next season in some capacity with the Browns, who are still on the hook to pay him $92 million — of his fully guaranteed $230 million contract — over the next two seasons. Releasing Watson would have damaging salary-cap implications, and while that would be a bitter financial pill for owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam to swallow, it could the Browns' safest and easiest exit strategy. And if they needed any proof that such a strategy can work, the Browns only had to look across the field at the Broncos, who got out from under QB Russell Wilson's monster contract by cutting him, taking the financial hit and drafting Bo Nix. After some common early growing pains, Nix has settled in and the rookie has the Broncos in the mix for a postseason berth. It wasn't long ago that the Browns thought their quarterback concerns were behind them. Instead, they lie ahead. Stefanski's decision to hand over the play-calling duties to first-year coordinator Ken Dorsey has been a positive. While the move hasn't led directly to many wins, the Browns have moved the ball much more effectively and scored at least 20 points in three of five games since the switch after not scoring 20 in their first eight. An issue all season, Cleveland's defense was again gashed for long plays and TDs, including a 93-yard scoring pass in the third quarter. The Browns have allowed 48 plays of 20-plus yards and 12 of at least 40 yards. WR Jerry Jeudy. His return to Denver was a personal and professional triumph — except on the scoreboard. Vowing revenge on the Broncos, who traded him to the Browns in March, Jeudy had the best game of his career, catching nine passes for 235 yards and a TD. Since Winston took over as Cleveland's starter, Jeudy leads the league with 614 yards receiving. Jeudy just might be the No. 1 receiver the Browns have needed following Amari Cooper's trade. Jordan Hicks gets an honorable mention after recording 12 tackles. K Dustin Hopkins. He missed a 47-yard field goal to end Cleveland's first drive, setting the tone for a night of missed opportunities. After making 33 of 36 field goal tries in his first season with the Browns, Hopkins is just 16 of 23, with his inaccuracy raising questions why the team signed him to a three-year, $15.9 million contract in July. Stefanski had no updates from the game. ... LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah remains sidelined with a neck injury suffered on Nov. 2. Stefanski ruled him out again for Sunday's game at Pittsburgh. 552 — Yards of total offense for the Browns, just 10 shy of the single-game franchise record set in 1989. A short turnaround before visiting the Steelers (9-3), who will be looking to avenge their 24-19 loss in Cleveland on Nov. 21. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
By Michitaka Kaiya 8:00 JST, December 28, 2024 Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who is also president of the Liberal Democratic Party, is seeking to overcome the LDP’s predicament as a minority ruling party by managing the Diet in a low-key manner. The government and ruling parties were able to clear the first hurdle, passing the fiscal 2024 supplementary budget bill, with the cooperation of the Democratic Party for the People and the Japan Innovation Party. A senior government official praised the prime minister for listening attentively to the opposition parties’ requests, saying, “This is the fruit of the prime minister’s political stance.” While dialogue with opposition parties is indispensable, the prime minister sees 1950s Prime Minister Tanzan Ishibashi as a model of how democracy should work. Ishibashi, a journalist who had fought against prewar militarism, emphasized the power of speech and is widely respected by members of the ruling and opposition parties alike. Ishiba’s Nov. 29 policy speech quoted from Ishibashi’s policy speech: “As a main principle of our national policy, we will institute the practice of exchanging views in a straightforward manner at all times and work together while also clearly stating our individual stances. We must endeavor to keep pace with global progress while engaging in this ready cooperation.” Since the Ishibashi Cabinet was in office for only 65 days, some in the government were cautious, saying that the quote was bad luck. But Ishiba, a devoted admirer of Ishibashi who owns a complete collection of his writings, insisted and the quotation remained. It is not a bad thing for the government and ruling party to incorporate policies that are in the national interest, even if they are an opposition party’s idea. In some European countries, a form of “consensus democracy” based on a multiparty system has taken root. However, the reality in Japan is that the government and most of the parties avoid painful discussions on the financial resources needed to support their policies, and instead, only pork-barrel policies take precedence. The DPFP has been strongly calling for the “¥1.03 million barrier,” the annual income threshold above which tax is levied, to be raised to ¥1.78 million. Both the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, hoping to get support for the supplementary budget from the DPFP, agreed to raise it. The Japan Innovation Party called for free education up to high school, and the ruling parties decided to set up a consultative body to study the issue. No party has been seen to squarely raise the issue of financial resources. Some within the LDP voiced concern that the party was making too many concessions to opposition parties and that it was giving up cards it could play in negotiations to win opposition support for the fiscal 2025 initial budget proposal. Ishiba has told those around him, “We are not in a political situation where we can establish our unique policies,” and the national vision he is aiming for remains vague. Most policy decisions are also left to the LDP. Even before assuming the prime minister’s post, Ishiba had a reputation as a politician who was good at debating and criticizing, but unable to make decisions. Some in the government have pointed out that the prime minister’s weaknesses are less noticeable because he is a member of a minority ruling party, which limits his freedom of action. However, the ideal form of democracy would be for the prime minister, as the top leader, to clearly present his vision for the nation and for the ruling and opposition parties to engage in vigorous debate based on that vision. Although Tanzan Ishibashi stepped down after a short period as prime minister due to poor health, he continues to be highly regarded as a leader for his clear vision in foreign and domestic politics, including his “Little Japanism.” Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan leader Yoshihiko Noda, who served as prime minister in 2011-12, also holds Ishibashi in high regard. On Dec. 6, Noda made the following complaint about Ishiba at a press conference: “Mr. Ishibashi was a great politician in the sense that he never wavered in his thinking even at major turning points of the times. Prime Minister Ishiba is inconsistent in what he said during the LDP presidential election and what he is saying in the Diet. I wish he would learn more from Tanzan Ishibashi.” At a meeting on Dec. 19, Ishiba expressed his determination, saying, “Although we are a minority ruling party, we will listen to the opinions of various people and establish the Japan we should aim for.” Will Ishiba establish a politics of deliberative democracy that aims to reflect the broad popular will, including that of minority groups? Or will he fall into a politics that only seeks to prolong his administration’s life, marked only by caution in dealing with the ruling and opposition parties? Ishiba’s true value will be severely tested at the ordinary Diet session to be convened in January. The success or failure of this process will directly affect the House of Councillors election to be held in the summer. Political Pulse appears every Saturday. By integrating with Ford China, Lincoln could potentially benefit from access to a wider range of vehicles and technologies, as well as the ability to tailor its products to better suit the needs of the Chinese market.Stock market today: Wall Street inches higher to set more recordsWashington — House Republicans on Thursday blocked two Democratic resolutions that would have compelled the House Ethics Committee to release a potentially damaging report on its investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, voting to refer the matter back to the committee. Democratic Reps. Sean Casten of Illinois and Steve Cohen of Tennessee introduced twin privileged resolutions, forcing floor action within two legislative days. In a 206 to 198 vote, all but one Republican voted to refer Casten's resolution back to the Ethics Committee. Cohen's resolution met the same fate in a 204 to 198 vote, with one Republican voting with Democrats. Republican Rep. Tom McClintock of California was the only member to cross party lines. In a statement, Casten accused his Republican colleagues of voting "to sweep these allegations under the rug and set an unfortunate precedent." He said he would continue to pursue the report's release. The votes came after President-elect Donald Trump announced last month that he intended to nominate Gaetz for attorney general, prompting intense scrutiny over the Florida Republican's background and the House Ethics Committee's investigation into allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Gaetz, who has denied the allegations, withdrew from consideration for the attorney general nomination a little over a week after Trump made the announcement. Gaetz immediately resigned from Congress after Trump announced he wanted the Florida Republican to join his Cabinet. The timing of his resignation came days before the House panel was set to vote on releasing its report on Gaetz. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, urged the committee to keep the report secret, arguing that a former member is beyond the panel's jurisdiction and it would set a "terrible precedent." "I believe it is very important to maintain the House's tradition of not issuing ethics reports on people who are no longer members of Congress," he said on Nov. 15. "The House Ethics Committee's jurisdiction is over sitting members of Congress. That's an important rule." Casten's resolution cited four instances in which the Ethics Committee has released reports on its investigations into members after they've resigned. The bipartisan committee met Nov. 20 to consider whether to release the report , but was evenly split along party lines about how to move forward. A day later, Gaetz withdrew himself from consideration, facing a tenuous path to Senate confirmation. There was growing interest from senators on both sides of the aisle in seeing the report before a confirmation vote. The House Ethics Committee met again Thursday to discuss its investigation into allegations against Gaetz. In a statement, the panel said it is "continuing to discuss the matter." The committee's top Democrat, Rep. Susan Wild of Pennsylvania, who wanted the report made public, did not attend the meeting.
